been given can be called as given and not what is being given. In order to 4 remove this confusion the senior ascetics explained that in their views
there is hardly any difference in the time of action and that of
conclusion. That which is being given should be taken as given (because $ it has already been assigned to be given). (Vritti, leaf 381) ॐ १६. तए णं ते अन्नउत्थिया ते थेरे भगवंते एवं वयासी-तुभे णं अज्जो ! तिविहं तिविहेणं अस्संजय + जाव एगंतबाला यावि भवह।
१६. [ अन्य आक्षेप ] तत्पश्चात् उन अन्यतीर्थिकों ने उन स्थविर भगवन्तों से कहा-आर्यो ! (हम कहते हैं कि) तुम ही त्रिविध-त्रिविध असंयत, अविरत यावत् एकान्तबाल हो ! ___16. [Another blame] Then the heretics said to those senior ascetics-Noble ones ! (We say that) It is you who are devoid of restraint (asamyat) ... and so on up to ... through three means (karan) and three methods (yoga) ... and so on up to ... complete ignorant (ekaant baal).
१७. तए णं ते थेरा भगवंतो ते अन्नउत्थिए एवं वयासी-केण कारणेणं अम्हे तिविहं तिविहेणं जाव एगंतबाला यावि भवामो ?
१७. [ प्रतिप्रश्न ] इस पर उन स्थविर भगवन्तों ने उन अन्यतीर्थिकों से (पुनः) पूछा-आर्यो ! किस * कारण से हम त्रिविध-त्रिविध यावत् एकान्तबाल हैं ?
17. The senior ascetics asked those heretics-Noble ones ! Why do you say that we are devoid of restraint (asamyat) ... and so on up to ... ___ through three means (karan) and three methods (yoga) ... and so on 4 to ... complete ignorant (ekaant baal) ?
१८. तए णं ते अन्नउत्थिया ते थेरे भगवंते एवं वयासी-तुब्भे णं अज्जो ! रीयं रीयमाणा पुढविं ॐ पेच्चहे अभिहणह वत्तेह लेसेह संघाएह संघटेह परितावेह किलामेह उवद्दवेह, तए णं तुब्भे पुढविं पेच्चेमाणा जाव उवद्दवेमाणा तिविहं तिविहेणं असंजयअविरय जाव एगंतबाला यावि भवह।
१८. [ आक्षेप ] तब उन अन्यतीर्थिकों ने स्थविर भगवन्तों से यों कहा-"आर्यो ! तुम गमन करते है हुए पृथ्वीकायिक जीवों को दबाते (आक्रान्त करते) हो, हनन करते हो, पादाभिघात करते हो, उन्हें ॐ भूमि के साथ श्लिष्ट (संघर्षित) करते (टकराते) हो; उन्हें एक-दूसरे के ऊपर इकट्ठे करते हो, जोर से 5 स्पर्श करते हो, उन्हें परितापित करते हो, उन्हें मारणान्तिक कष्ट देते हो और उपद्रवित करते-मारते 5
हो। इस प्रकार पृथ्वीकायिक जीवों को दबाते हुए यावत् मारते हुए तुम त्रिविध-त्रिविध असंयत, ॐ अविरत यावत् एकान्तबाल हो।' 9. 18. Then the heretics said to those senior ascetics-Noble ones! While
