आलस्य और दुष्ट की संगति से वह नष्ट हो जाती है। हे पुत्र, तुम्हें मैं यह उपदेश देता हूँ। असहाय लोगों तौलनेवाले तथा मन्त्रप्रयोग से इन्द्र को पराजित करनेवाले वृद्धों की जिसने सेवा नहीं की है, ऐसे उन कुलमुखों का विश्व में कुछ भी सिद्ध नहीं होता। धागों के समूह से हाथी भी बाँध लिया जाता है। हवा से लगकर को कुल, बल, श्री और मद की ज्वाला में दग्ध समझो। पण्डितों की संगति से मूर्ख भी पण्डित हो जाते नाव चली जाती है, और उसी हवा के संसर्ग से आग जल उठती है, मन्त्री यदि शूर, असह्य सहन करनेवाला हैं, उसी प्रकार जिस प्रकार 'चम्पा' की गन्ध से तिल सुगन्धित हो जाते हैं। पण्डितों की सेवा से बुद्धि उत्पन्न पण्डित और मित्र है तो कार्य में उसका महान् आदर करना चाहिए, उसमें उसके साथ उपेक्षा का बर्ताव नहीं होती है, यह सेवा सात प्रकार की कही जाती है-शुश्रूषा, श्रवण, सन्धारण, मोदन, ग्रहण, ज्ञान और निश्चय करना चाहिए, क्योंकि दुनिया में शत्रु और मित्र होने का कारण कार्य ही है। कार्य भी बुद्धि के द्वारा सम्भव मन (तर्क-वितर्क की शक्ति) । मन्त्र से संबंधित बुद्धि तीन प्रकार की होती है और जो तीनों लोकों में और उत्पन्न होता है, बुद्धि भी वृद्धों की सेवा करने से मिलती है
चिन्तामणि कही जाती है। हे इक्ष्वाकु कुल के मण्डन-ध्वज, सुनो-एक बुद्धि गुरुजन से प्राप्त होती है, दूसरी __घत्ता-जिनके सिर सफेद हो चुके हैं, जिनके मुख टेढ़े हैं, जो जरा से निन्दित हैं उन्हों छोड़ो। जो बुद्धि शास्त्र से और तीसरी अपने मन से उत्पन्न होती है। इससे मन्त्र अवश्य सिद्ध होता है। महामति मन्त्र स्वस्थ हैं, कर्म करनेमें कुशल हैं उन्हें मैं चाहता हूँ॥७॥
