महापुराणे उत्तरपुराणम् तत्पादपङ्कजश्लेषापवित्रां पापहां स्रजम् । चित्रां पित्रेऽदित द्वाभ्यां हस्ताभ्यां विनयानता ॥ ५४॥ तामादाय महीनाथो भक्त्यापश्यत्स्वयम्प्रभाम् । उपवासपरिश्रान्तां पारयेति विसj ताम् ॥ ५५ ॥ यौवनापूर्णसर्वाङ्गरमणीया प्रियात्मजा । कस्मै देयेयमित्येवमात्मन्येव वितर्कयन् ॥ ५६ ॥ 'मन्त्रिवर्ग समाहूय प्रस्तुतार्थ न्यवेदयत् । श्रुत्वा तत्सुश्रुतः प्राह परीक्ष्यात्मनि निश्चितम् ॥ ५७ ॥ अमुस्मिन्नुत्तरश्रेण्यामलकाख्यापुरेशितुः । मयूरग्रीवसंज्ञस्य प्रिया नीलाञ्जना तयोः ॥ ५४॥ अश्वग्रीवोऽग्रिमो नीलरथः कण्ठान्तनीलसु । वज्राख्यातास्त्रयः सर्वेऽप्यभूवन् पश्च सूनवः ॥ ५९॥ अश्वग्रीवस्य कनकचित्रा देवी सुतास्तयोः । ते ग्रीवाङ्गदचूडान्तरत्ना रत्नरथादिभिः ॥ ६ ॥ शतानि पञ्च मन्यस्य हरिश्मश्रुः श्रुताम्बुधिः । शतबिन्दुश्च नैमित्तिकोऽष्टाङ्गनिपुणो महान् ॥६॥ इति सम्पूर्णराज्याय खगश्रेणीद्वयेशिने । अश्वग्रीवाय दातव्या कन्येत्येतद्विचारयन् ॥ १२॥ अस्त्येव सुश्रुताख्यातं सर्वमित्यवनीपतिम् । इदं बहुश्रतोऽवोचदुचरं स्वमनोगतम् ॥ ६३ ।। स्वाभिजात्यमरोगत्वं वयः शीलं श्रुतं वपुः । लक्ष्मीः पक्षः परीवारो वरे नव गुणाः स्मृताः ॥ ६४ ॥ अश्वग्रीवे त एतेऽपि सन्ति किन्तु वयोऽधिकम् । तस्मात्कोऽपि वरोऽन्योऽस्तु सवयास्तद्गुणान्वितः॥६५॥ राजा सिंहरथः ख्यातः पुरे गगनवल्लभे । परः पश्मरथो मेधपुरे चित्रपुराधिराट् ॥ ६६ ॥ अरिअयाख्यस्त्रिपुरे खगेशो ललिताङ्गदः। कनकादिरथो विद्याकुशलोऽश्वपुरेश्वरः ॥ ६७ ॥ महारत्नपुरे विश्वखगाधीशो धनञ्जयः। कन्यैष्वेकतमायेयं दातव्येति विनिश्चितम् ॥ ६८ ॥ अवधार्य वचस्तस्य विचार्य श्रुतसागरः। स्मृतिचक्षुरिमां वाचं व्याजहार मनोहराम् ॥ ६९ ॥
उपवास किया जिससे उसका शरीर कुछ म्लान हो गया। उसने अहन्त भगवानकी पूजा की तथा उनके चरण-कमलोंके संपर्कसे पवित्र पापहारिणी विचित्र माला विनयसे झुककर दो हाथोंसे पिताके लिए दी ।। ५३-५४ ॥ राजाने भक्ति पूर्वक वह माला ले ली और उपवाससे थकी हुई स्वयंप्रभाकी ओर देख, 'जाओ पारण करो' यह कर उसे विदा किया ॥ ५५ ॥ पुत्रीके चले जाने पर राजा मन ही मन विचार करने लगा कि जो यौवनले परिपूर्ण समस्त अङ्गोंसे सुन्दर है ऐसी यह पुत्री किसके लिए देनी चाहिये ॥५६॥ उसने उसी सयय मन्त्रिवर्गको बुलाकर प्रकृत बात कही, उसे सुनकर सुश्रुत नामका मंत्री परीक्षा कर तथा अपने मनमें निश्चय कर बोला ।। ५७ ।। कि इसी विजयार्धकी उत्तर श्रेणी में अलका नगरीके राजा मयूरग्रीव हैं, उनकी स्त्रीका नाम नीलाञ्जना है, उन दोनोंके अश्वग्रीव, नीलरथ, नीलकण्ठ, सुकण्ठ और वन्नकण्ठ नामके पाँच पुत्र हैं। इनमें अश्वग्रीव सबसे बड़ा है ।। ५८-५६ ।। अश्वग्रीवकी स्त्रीका नाम कनकचित्रा है उन दोनोंके रत्नग्रीव, रत्नाङ्गद, रजचूड तथा रजरथ आदि पाँच सौ पुत्र हैं। शास्त्रज्ञानका सागर हरिश्मश्रु इसका मंत्री है तथा शतबिन्दु निमित्तज्ञानी है--पुरोहित है जो कि अष्टाङ्ग निमित्तज्ञानमें अतिशय निपुण है।। ६०-६१ ॥ इस प्रकार अश्वग्रीव सम्पूर्ण राज्यका अधिपति है और दोनों श्रेणियोंका स्वामी है अतः इसके लिए ही कन्या देनी चाहिये ।। ६२ ।। इसके बाद सुश्रुत मंत्रीके द्वारा कही हुई बातका विचार करता हुआ बहुश्रुत मंत्री राजासे अपने हृदयकी बात कहने लगा। वह बोला कि सुश्रुत मंत्रीने जो कुछ कहा है वह यद्यपि ठीक है तो भी निम्नाङ्कित बात विचारणीय है। कुलीनता, आरोग्य, अवस्था, शील, श्रुत, शरीर, लक्ष्मी, पक्ष और परिवार, वर के ये नौ गुण कहे गये हैं। अश्वग्रीवमें यद्यपि ये सभी गुण विद्यमान हैं किन्तु उसकी अवस्था अधिक है, अतः कोई दूसरा वर जिसकी अवस्था कन्याके समान हो और गुण अश्वग्रीवके समान हों, खोजना चाहिये ॥ ६३-६५ ॥ गगनवल्लभपुरका राजा चित्ररथ प्रसिद्ध है, मेघपुरमें श्रेष्ठ राजा पद्मरथ रहता है. चित्रपुरका स्वामी रिजय है। त्रिपुरनगरम विद्याधरीका राजा ललिताङ्गद रहता। पुरका राजा कनकरथ विद्यामें अत्यन्त कुशल है, और महारत्नपुरका राजा धनञ्जय समस्त विद्याधरोंका स्वामी है । इनमेंसे किसी एकके लिए कन्या देनी चाहिये यह निश्चय है॥६६-६८ ॥ बहुश्रुतके

"Ashvagriva's wife's name is Kanakachitra. They have five hundred sons: Ratnagriva, Ratnanga, Rajachuda, Rajaratha, and so on. Harishmashru is the minister, who is an ocean of knowledge, and Shatabindu is the priest, who is a master of all eight branches of knowledge." || 60-61 ||

"Thus, Ashvagriva is the lord of the entire kingdom and the master of both armies. Therefore, it is to him that we should give our daughter." || 62 ||

After considering the words of Sushruta, the wise minister Bahushruta, with his eyes of memory, spoke these beautiful words to the king. He said, "What Sushruta has said is true, but there are some things to consider. The nine qualities of a husband are: noble birth, good health, youth, good character, knowledge, good physique, wealth, a good family, and a good entourage. Ashvagriva has all these qualities, but he is too old. Therefore, we should find another husband who is of the same age as our daughter and who has the same qualities as Ashvagriva." || 63-65 ||

"The king of Gaganavallabhapur is known as Chitraraha. The best king in Meghapur is Padmaratha. The lord of Chitrapur is Rijaya. The king of Tripuranagara, the city of the Vidyadharis, is Lalitangada. The king of Kanakapur is Kanakaratha, who is very skilled in knowledge. The king of Maharatanapur is Dhananjaya, who is the lord of all the Vidyadharis. It is certain that we should give our daughter to one of these." || 66-68 ||
