महापुराणम्
श्रनाशितंभवं पीत्वा सुस्वादुसरितां जलम् । गतागतानि कुर्बन्तं सन्तोषादिव वीचिभिः ॥ ८४ ॥ नदीवधूभिरासेव्यं कृतरत्नपरिग्रहम् । महा' भोगिभिराराध्यं चातुरन्तमिव प्रभुम् ॥८५॥ यादोदोर्घातनिर्घात दूरोच्चलितशीकरैः । सपताकमित्राशेष शेषार्णवविनिर्जयात् ॥८६॥ कुलाचलपृयुस्तम्भजम्बू द्वीप महौकसः" । विनीलरत्ननिर्माणम् एकं सालमिवोच्छ्रितम् ॥८७॥ श्रनादिमस्तपर्यन्तम् अखिलार्थावगाहनम् । गभीरशब्दसन्दर्भ श्रुतस्कन्धमिवापरम् ॥८८॥ नित्यप्रवृत्तशब्दत्वाद् द्रव्याथिकनयाश्रितम् । वीचीनां क्षणभङगित्वात् पर्यायनयगोचरम् ॥८६॥ नित्यानुबद्धतृष्णत्वात् शश्वज्जलपरिग्रहात्' । गुरूणां च तिरस्कारात् 'किराजानमिवान्वहम् ॥६०॥ मूलक विरोधाभास अलंकार है इसलिये प्रारम्भ-काल में विरोध मालूम होता है परन्तु बाद में उसका परिहार हो जाता । परिहार इस प्रकार समझना चाहिये कि वह मद्यके संगमसे रहित होकर मधु अर्थात् पुष्परसकी विक्रिया धारण कर रहा था अथवा मनोहर जलपक्षियों की क्रियाएं धारण कर रहा था और कामज्वरसे रहित होकर भी उद्रिक्त-कं-दर्प था अर्थात् जलके अहंकार से सहित था । वह समुद्र किनारेपर आती जाती हुई लहरोंसे ऐसा जान पड़ता था मानो जिससे कभी तृप्ति न हो ऐसा नदियोंका मीठा जल पीकर लहरों द्वारा संतोपसे गमनागमन ही कर रहा हो । अथवा वह समुद्र चक्रवर्तीके समान जान पड़ता था क्योंकि जिस प्रकार चक्रवर्ती अनेक स्त्रियोंके द्वारा सेवित होता है उसी प्रकार वह समुद्र भी नदीरूपी अनेक स्त्रियों के द्वारा सेवित था, जिस प्रकार चक्रवर्ती के पास अनेक रत्नोंका परिग्रह रहता है उसी प्रकार उस समुद्र के पास भी अनेक रत्नोंका परिग्रह था, जिस प्रकार चक्रवर्ती महाभोगी अर्थात् बड़े बड़े राजाओं के द्वारा आराधन करने योग्य होता है उसी प्रकार वह समुद्र भी महाभोगी अर्थात् बड़े-बड़े सर्पोंके द्वारा आराधन करने योग्य था और जिस प्रकार चक्रवर्ती चारों ओर प्रसिद्ध रहता है उसी प्रकार वह समुद्र भी चारों ओर प्रसिद्ध था - व्याप्त था । जल-जन्तुओंके आघातसे उड़ी हुई और बहुत दूरतक ऊंची उछटी हुई जलकी बूंदोंसे वह समुद्र ऐसा सुशोभित हो रहा था मानो बाकी के समस्त समुद्रोंको जीतनेसे अपनी विजय पताका ही फहरा रहा हो । उस समुद्रका नीले रंगका पानी वायुके वेगसे ऊपरको उठ रहा था जिससे वह ऐसा जान पड़ता था मानो कुलाचलरूपी बड़े बड़े खंभोंपर बने हुए जम्बुद्वीपरूपी विशाल घरका नील रत्नोंसे बना हुआ एक ऊंचा कोट ही हो । अथवा वह समुद्र दूसरे श्रुतस्कन्धके समान जान पड़ता था क्योंकि जिस प्रकार श्रुतस्कन्ध आदि - अन्त-रहित है उसी प्रकार वह समुद्र भी आदि - अन्त-रहित था, जिस प्रकार श्रुतस्कन्ध समस्त पदार्थोंका अवगाहन-निरूपण करनेवाला है उसी प्रकार वह समुद्र भी समस्त पदार्थोंका अवगाहन-प्रवेशन-धारण करनेवाला है, और जिस प्रकार श्रुतस्कन्ध में गंभीर शब्दोंकी रचना है उसी प्रकार उस समुद्रमें भी गम्भीर शब्द होते रहते थे-अथवा वह समुद्र द्रव्यार्थिक नयका आश्रय लेता हुआ सा जान पड़ता था क्योंकि जिस प्रकार द्रव्याथिंक नयसे प्रत्येक पदार्थ में नित्य शब्दकी प्रवृत्ति होती है उसी प्रकार उस समुद्र में भी नित्य शब्द की प्रवृत्ति हो रही थी अर्थात् निरन्तर गंभीर शब्द होता रहता था । अथवा उसकी लहरें क्षणभंगुर थीं इसलिये वह पर्यायार्थिकके गोचर भी मालूम होता था क्योंकि पर्यायार्थिक नय पदार्थोंको क्षणभंगुर अर्थात् अनित्य बतलाता है । अथवा वह समुद्र किसी दुष्ट राजाके समान मालूम होता था क्योंकि जिस प्रकार दुष्ट राजा सदा तृष्णासे सहित होता है उसी प्रकार वह समुद्र भी सदा तृष्णासे सहित रहता था अर्थात् प्रतिक्षण अनेक नदियोंका जल ग्रहण करते रहने १ अतृप्तिकरम् । २ महासर्पोंः । ३ सार्वत्रिकं प्रसिद्ध मित्यर्थः । चातुरङ्ग स०, इ० अ०, प० । ४ निर्द्धर्त-ल० । ५ महागृहस्य । ६ जलस्वीकारात् । ७ गुरुद्रव्याणामधःकरणात् । ८ कुत्सितराजानम् ।
