महापुराणम्
अकस्मादुच्चरवालम् अनिमित्तचलाचलम् । अकारणकृतावर्तम् अति सङकुसुकस्थितिम् ॥७२॥ हसन्तमिव फेनोवैः लसन्तमिवर वीचिभिः। चलन्तमिव कल्लोलः माद्यन्तभिव धूणितैः ॥७३॥ सरत्नमुल्बगविध मुक्तशूत्कारभीकरम् । स्फुरत्तरङगनिर्मोकं स्फुरन्तमिव भोगिनम् ॥७४॥ अत्यम्बुपानादुद्रिक्तप्रतिश्यायमिवाधिकम् । क्षुतानीव विकुर्वाण ध्वनितानि सहस्रशः ॥७॥ "अाधूनमसकृत्पीतविश्वस्त्रोतस्विनीरसम् । रसातिरेकादुद्गारं तन्वानमिव खात्कृतः ॥७६॥
निजगम्भीरपातालमहागर्तापदेशतः । अतृप्यन्तमिवाम्भोभिः पातालविवृताननम् ॥७७॥ के रोगीके समान जान पड़ता था क्योंकि जिस प्रकार अपस्मारका रोगी फेन सहित आती हई जृम्भिकाओं अर्थात् जमुहाइयोंसे व्याकुल रहता है उसी प्रकार वह समुद्र भी फेन सहित उठती हुई जृम्भिका अर्थात् लहरोंसे व्याकुल था, जिस प्रकार अपस्मारका रोगी किसी के द्वारा पकड़कर नहीं रखा जा सकता उसी प्रकार वह समुद्र भी किसीके द्वारा नहीं रोका जा सकता और जिस प्रकार अपस्मारका रोगी किसी भी जगह स्थिर नहीं रहता इसी प्रकार वह समुद्र भी किसी जगह स्थिर नहीं था-लहरोंके कारण चंचल हो रहा था। वह समद्र अकस्मात ही गम्भीर
करता था, विना कारण ही चंचल था और बिना कारण ही उसमें आवर्त अर्थात भंवर पड़ते थे, इसलिये उसकी दशा किसी अन्यन्त भयभीत मनुष्य के समान हो रही थी क्योंकि अत्यन्त भयभीत मनुष्य भी अचानक शब्द करने लगता है, चिल्ला उठता है, बिना कारण ही कांपने लगता है, और बिना कारण ही आवर्त करने लगता है इधर उधर भागने लगता है। वह समद्र फेन उठनेसे ऐसा जान पड़ता था मानो हँस ही रहा हो, ज्वार-भाटाओंसे ऐसा मालूम होता था मानो लास्य (नृत्य) ही कर रहा हो, लहरोंसे ऐसा सुशोभित होता था मानो चल ही रहा हो और हिलनेसे ऐसा दिखाई देता था मानो नशे में झूम ही रहा हो अथवा वह समुद्र किसी सर्पके समान जान पड़ता था क्योंकि जिस प्रकार सर्प रत्नसहित होता है उसी प्रकार वह समुद्र भी रत्नसहित था, जिस प्रकार सर्पमें उत्कट विष अर्थात् जहर रहता है उसी प्रकार समुद्र में भी उत्कट विष अर्थात् जल था, जिस प्रकार सर्प सू सू आदि फुकारोंसे भयंकर होता है उसी प्रकार वह समुद्र भी सू सू आदि शब्दोंसे भयंकर था, जिस प्रकार सर्पके देदीप्यमान कांचली होती है उसी प्रकार उस समद्रके भी देदीप्यमान लहरें थीं, और जिस प्रकार सर्प चंचल रहता है उसी प्रकार वह समुद्र भी चंचल था । अथवा वह समुद्र ऐसा जान पड़ता था मानो अधिक पानी पीनेसे उसे सर्दी (जुकाम) ही हो गई हो और इसीलिये हजारों शब्दोंके बहाने छींकें ही ले रहा हो। अथवा वह समुद्र किसी आधुन अर्थात् बहुत खानेबाले-पेटू-मनुष्य के समान जान पड़ता था, क्योंकि जिस प्रकार आघून मनुष्य बहुत खाता है और बादमें भोजन की अधिकता होनेसे डकारें लेता है उसी प्रकार उस समुद्रने भी समस्त नदियोंका जल पी लिया था और बादमें जलकी अधिकता होनेसे वह भी शब्दोंके बहाने डकारें ले रहा था। वह समुद्र अपने गम्भीर पातालरूपी महाउदरके बहानेसे जलसे कभी तृप्त नहीं होता था और इसी लिये मानो उसने तालु पर्यन्त अपना मुख खोल रखा था। भावार्थ-वह समुद्र किसी ऐसे मनुष्यके समान जान पड़ता था जो बहुत खानेपर भी तृप्त नहीं होता, क्योंकि जिस प्रकार तृप्त नहीं होनेवाला मनुष्य बहुत कुछ खाकर भी तृष्णासे अपना मुख खोले रहता है उसी प्रकार वह समुद्र भी बहुत कुछ जल ग्रहण कर चुकनेपर भी तृष्णासे अपना मुख खोले रहता था-नदियों
१चञ्चलम् । २ नितराम् अस्थिरस्थितिम् । 'असंकसकोऽस्थिरे' इत्यमरः । विशेषनिघ्नवर्गः । ३ नृत्यन्तम् । ४ उत्कटजलम् । ५ सीकरम् प० । ६ उत्कटपीनसम् 'प्रतिश्यायस्तु पीनराः' इत्यभिधानात् । ७ औदरिकम् । तृप्तिरहितमित्यर्थः । ८ -गपि- ल० ।

Suddenly roaring, restless without cause, moving without reason, in a very agitated state. ||72||
As if laughing with foam, as if shining with waves, as if moving with billows, as if intoxicated with dust. ||73||
Like a serpent with jewels, with fierce hissing, with sparkling waves, as if shining with enjoyment. ||74||
As if suffering from a severe cold due to excessive drinking of water, as if sneezing thousands of times due to hunger. ||75||
As if a glutton, having drunk the water of all the rivers, belching out the excess water. ||76||
With its deep abyss-like great belly, as if insatiable with water, with its mouth wide open like the underworld. ||77||
It seemed like a person suffering from epilepsy, because just as a person suffering from epilepsy is restless with foam-filled yawns, so too was the ocean restless with foam-filled waves. Just as a person suffering from epilepsy cannot be held by anyone, so too could the ocean not be stopped by anyone. And just as a person suffering from epilepsy does not stay in one place, so too did the ocean not stay in one place, being restless due to the waves. The ocean suddenly became deep, restless without cause, and whirlpools formed in it without reason, therefore its state was like that of a very frightened person, because a very frightened person also suddenly starts making sounds, shouts, trembles without reason, and starts whirling around, running here and there. The ocean seemed as if it were laughing due to the rising foam, as if it were dancing due to the tides, as if it were moving due to the waves, and as if it were swaying in intoxication due to the movement. Or the ocean seemed like a serpent, because just as a serpent has jewels, so too did the ocean have jewels. Just as a serpent has potent poison, so too did the ocean have potent water. Just as a serpent is fearsome with its hissing sounds, so too was the ocean fearsome with its hissing sounds. Just as a serpent has a shining skin, so too did the ocean have shining waves. And just as a serpent is restless, so too was the ocean restless. Or the ocean seemed as if it had caught a cold due to drinking too much water, and therefore was sneezing with thousands of sounds. Or the ocean seemed like a glutton, because just as a glutton eats a lot and then belches due to the excess food, so too did the ocean drink the water of all the rivers and then belched out the excess water with sounds. The ocean was never satisfied with water due to its deep abyss-like great belly, and therefore it seemed as if it had opened its mouth up to the palate.
