416 Mahapuraanam Even though she was willing to accept him, he was reluctant. Thus, seeing her beloved, some woman, pierced by the arrows of her enemies, died herself, though she was not wounded by the arrows of love. [263] Not recognizing the wounds on his body, and seeing his beauty, another woman, not knowing, died, thinking that the wounds were inflicted by herself. [264] "My dear, you were so fond of Veeralakshmi, that even though I tried to stop you, you went to her. Now, you are suffering from the harsh wounds inflicted by her." Thus, another woman died. [265] "My dear, I was coming with you, but you stopped me and went to accept fame. Even though you knew that fame is always wandering around (a promiscuous woman), you were deluded into thinking that she was pure. Now, look, she has stayed there. Alas, do men know the heart or separation?" Thus, another woman, filled with jealousy, went on her beloved's path, that is, she died seeing her beloved dead. [266-267] "My dear, why didn't I come with you, even though I was stopped? While I was near you, these low-class courtesans (celestial nymphs) took you away. Well, what is lost? Won't I take you away from them?" Thus, lamenting, a woman with a sweet voice followed her beloved, that is, she also died. [268-269] A warrior, whose whole body was pierced by arrows, and whose life was stuck in his eyes, was waiting for his beloved to come. [300] Seeing her beloved, whose lips were bitten in anger, another woman, filled with jealousy towards Veeralakshmi, died in a fit of anger. [301] Thinking that his beloved was in his heart, a warrior, whose heart was pierced by an arrow, gave up his life, saying, "Alas, I am dead." [302] She was experiencing an unparalleled joy at the union with her husband. [292] One of those women, seeing her husband dead from the arrows of his enemies, was surprised that he had died even though his body was not wounded by the arrows of love. [293] Another woman, not knowing, saw her beloved, whose limbs were not properly visible, and thought that the wounds were inflicted by herself, and died. [294]
