## Forty-First Chapter
271. The Veda is that which is well-spoken, free from the twelve blemishes of the six categories. That which advocates violence is not the Veda, it is the word of Yama. ||22|| The Puranas and Dharma Shastras are those which prohibit killing. That which advocates killing is to be understood as created by the deceitful. ||23|| The conduct of restraint with vigilance is the characteristic of the six Aryakarma. The conduct of the four Ashramas, as described by others, is not true. ||24|| Those actions which are described from conception to Nirvana are to be understood. Those actions described by others from conception to death are not considered right actions. ||25|| Those mantras which are used in actions like conception, etc., are considered to be righteous mantras. Those which are used in killing beings are to be understood as evil mantras. ||26|| Tirthankaras like Vishveshwara are to be understood as deities who bring peace. Those deities whose livelihood is based on flesh are to be shunned. ||27|| That which is the means of Nirvana, as taught by the Jinas, is the true Linga. The marking of a deer skin, etc., is a false Linga created by the Kuliṅgas. ||28|| Eating without flesh is purity in the matter of food. Those who eat flesh are to be understood as destroyers of all. ||29|| Non-violence is the purity of those who are free from attachment and compassionate. Those who are fond of killing animals are not pure, they are of evil intent. ||30|| Sexual purity is considered to be in those who are free from desire and have conquered their senses. Those who are content with their wives are also considered to have sexual purity. Others are merely hypocrites. ||31|| Thus, one whose understanding is pure, is considered to be an Apt. The Dharma spoken by him is beneficial to those who seek welfare. ||32||
Except for this, all other Dharmas are mere appearances of Dharma, and all other paths are mere appearances of the path. ||20-21||
