## Chapter 250: The Mahapurana
**116.** He should not sleep on a bed or a cot, nor should he rub his body against another's. He should sleep alone on the ground for the sake of purity of his vows.
**117.** He should observe this vow until he has completed his studies. After that, he should observe the vows that are the foundation of householders.
**118.** He should learn the **Sutramoupasika** from the mouth of his Guru, and then, with humility, he should study the scriptures that deal with the inner self.
**119.** There is no harm in studying grammar, lexicography, and economics, as these help to awaken good qualities and to acquire knowledge.
**120.** He should also study astrology, prosody, omens, and mathematics, in particular.
**121.** This is the fifteenth **Vratacharya** practice. After this, the **Vratavtarana** ceremony takes place for the Brahmachari who has completed his studies. In this ceremony, he continues to observe the ordinary vows, but he abandons the special vows that he had taken during his studies.
**122.** After this ceremony, he should observe the vows of abstaining from honey and meat, the five **Udumbar** fruits, and the five types of sins (violence, etc.) for the rest of his life.
**123.** This **Vratavtarana** ceremony should be performed after twelve or sixteen years, with the Guru as a witness and with the worship of the Jina.
**124.** It is proper to honor the twice-born (Brahmanas) first, and then to perform the **Vratavtarana**. After the **Vratavtarana**, he should accept clothes, ornaments, and garlands, according to the Guru's instructions.
**125.** If he is a Kshatriya, he can also carry weapons for the protection of his livelihood, or even for adornment.
**126.** Thus, in this ceremony, although he abandons the **Bhoga-Brahma** vow (the vow of abstaining from betel nut, etc.), he still observes the **Kama-Brahma** vow (the vow of abstaining from sexual desire) until he is ready to take the next step.
**127.** This is the **Vratavtarana** ceremony. He should take a purifying bath in water.
