The thirty-eighth chapter of this book is about the *Maudibandhan* of the *Arhat* devotee in the *Jinalaya*. This ceremony should be performed with the offering of vows, under the watchful eyes of the *Garu*. ||10||
The one who wears a *shikha*, a white *dhoti*, and a white *dupatta*, who is free from *vesha* and *vikaras*, and who wears the *yajnopavita* thread as a symbol of his vow, is called a *brahmacharin* at that time. ||106||
Other names can be given to him that are appropriate to his conduct. At that time, everyone except the royal prince should be sustained by begging, and even the royal prince should go to the inner chambers and ask for alms from his mother, etc., in a vessel, because this is the only way to receive alms at that time. Whatever is received in alms should be offered to the *Arhat* deity, and the rest of the food should be eaten by him. ||107-108||
This is the fourteenth *upaneti* action.
Now, we will describe the actions of the *brahmacharin* who wears the symbols of his vow on his waist, thighs, chest, and head. ||109||
The symbol on the waist is made by tying three strands of *munj* rope. This *Maudibandhan* is a part of the purification of the three jewels and is a symbol of the twice-born. ||110||
The symbol on the thighs is a perfectly clean white *dhoti*. This *dhoti* signifies that the lineage of the *Arhat* is pure and vast. ||111||
The symbol on the chest is the *yajnopavita* tied with seven strands. This *yajnopavita* signifies the seven supreme realms. ||112||
The symbol on the head is a clean and excellent *mundan* (shaving of the head), which enhances the *mundan* of his mind, speech, and body. The meaning is that the mind, speech, and body are purified by shaving the head. ||113||
In this way, he should wear the vows that are purified by these symbols, such as the vow of non-violence, etc., and the vow of *brahmacharin*. ||114||
This *brahmacharin* should not use a twig for cleaning his teeth, nor should he eat *paan*, nor should he apply *anjan* (kohl), nor should he bathe with turmeric, etc. He should bathe only with pure water every day. ||115||
