## Chapter Thirty-Five
181. The application of these means (Sāma, Dāna, Danda, Bheda) to the appropriate person is the key to success, while their misapplication leads to defeat.
**10.** Sāma (conciliation) alone is not considered effective in pacifying a powerful person. Even if he is friendly, if he is inflamed with anger, using Sāma with him is like pouring water on hot ghee.
**101.** Similarly, I consider it futile to offer something to a very powerful person. How can a blazing fire be extinguished by offering thousands of fuel sticks?
**102.** Just as heated iron does not become soft, a powerful person does not become soft by being subjected to hardship. Therefore, using Danda (punishment) on him is pointless. Danda can only be used on an elephant that can be captured by persuasion and caressing, not on a lion.
**103.** Therefore, those who misapply these means (Sāma, Dāna, Danda, Bheda) and are ignorant of their application, like you, suffer due to their lack of knowledge in using these four means.
