Chapter Thirty-Four
166. Those who were equal-minded saw praise, blame, happiness, sorrow, and honor and dishonor with equanimity. ||204||
20. Observing the vow of silence, those who sought food for their bodies, went out, and even if they did not obtain it, they did not break their vow of silence. ||205||
206. Those whose bodies were emaciated due to great fasts, strived only for the stability of their bodies, but they did not even desire impure food in their minds. ||206||
207. Those who were foremost in the practice of *gochara*, having eaten the appropriate food without delay, rejected it again and went to the forest of penance. ||207||
208. Even though the bodies of those great sages were emaciated due to the heat of penance, they did not abandon the penance they had begun. ||208||
209. Although their bodies became weak due to intense penance, their vow, which was based on proper understanding, did not weaken. ||209||
210. Those who fasted for a long time were not defeated by the *parishahas*, but the *parishahas* themselves were unable to conquer them and were defeated. ||210||
211. The brilliance of those who were burnt by the fire of penance became even more intense. Just as the brilliance of a refined gold increases, so too does the brilliance of those who have undergone penance. ||211||
212. Those whose bodies were glowing with the fire of penance, attained the highest purity within. Just as gold becomes pure when the mold is heated, so too does the soul become pure when the body is heated. ||212||
213. Although their bodies were reduced to skin and bones, they attained the highest purity of meditation. All external practices are for the purification of the inner self. ||213||
214. The powers of *anima* and others, born of yoga, manifested in them. Pure penance bears great fruit. ||214||
