विभाग की अनदेखी के कारण सैकड़ों निदर्शन अभी तक नष्ट हो गये है और सैकड़ों नष्ट होने के कगार में है । इससे शर्मनाक स्थिति हमारे लिये और क्या हो सकती है कि हम अपनी अति प्राचीन अमूल्य विरासत को संभाल नहीं पा रहे हैं ।
स्वतंत्रता के बाद दामोदर नदी पर जो बांध बनाये गये उसमें सैकड़ों निदर्शन नष्ट हो चुके हैं । (सन् १९६९ ई. में पाँचेत डैम के निर्माण के समय २० प्राचीन मंदिर नष्ट हो गये । १९८५ ई. में सुवर्ण रेखा नदी पर चांदिल डैम का निर्माण हुआ और २६ मंदिर जल के गर्भ में समा गये । अकेले चांदिल डैम के अन्तर्गत १०० गाँव डूब गये जिनमें जैन राजा विक्रमादित्य की जन्मस्थली भी थी । स्थानीय गाँव वासियों द्वारा जमशेदपुर के Aboriginal Society for Art and Recreation के अन्तर्गत अनेक तीर्थंकर मूर्तियों को ले जाकर सुरक्षित रखा । इच्छागढ़, दुलमी तथा कुछ गांव की अन्य मूर्तियों को भी Irrigation Department के एक छोटे से संग्रहालय में रखा गया । इस विषय में एक रिपोर्ट में लिखा है कि In the Lower Damodar Valley there is the problem of destruction of ancient Jain temples in the score from flooding in dams such as the Panchet Dam on the river Damodar (1969), without recording over 26 temples and Chandil Dam on the river Suvarnarekha, (1985) 20 temples on more (Mitra 1969). The Chandil Dam alone drowned over a hundred villages in the birth-land of Vikramaditya the great Jain King, without archeological salvage operations. Local villagers under the umbrella of the Aboriginal Society for Art and Recreation, Jamshedpur, managed to save scores of statues of Tirthankaras, and other granite and sand-stone statuary from Ichagarh, Dulmi, and a few adjoining villages, which are preserved in a small museum built by the Irrigation Department near the Chandil Dam.
