धातु शिल्प :
यह सराक जाति धातु विद्या में अत्यन्त ही उन्नत और पारदर्शी थी । इन्होंने ही ताम्र शिल्प को उन्नत किया । सिंह भूम अंचल की ताम्र खदानें इसकी पुष्टि करती है । यूरोपियन विद्वान Mr. Velentine Bal ने अपनी पुस्तक में लिखा है- "छोटा नागपुर के मालभूमि की तलहटी से ताम्बे की खान युक्त पहाड़ियों का पर्यवेक्षण करते-करते मैं जितना ही पूर्व की ओर अग्रसर होता गया उतना ही देखता गया कि जहाँ भी खानें थी उन सब से ही ताम्बा निष्कासन का कार्य हो चुका था । पहाड़ों के ऊपर, अधिपत्यकाओं में, अरण्य में, यहाँ तक कि जो धूल धक्कड़ एवं गर्दिश के नीचे दब चुकी थीं इनसे भी ताम्बा निकाला जा चुका था । यह देखकर मेरे मन में कौतुहल एवं प्रश्न जागृत हुआ कि वे लोग कौन थे जिन्होंने इस खानों से इतनी निपुणतापूर्वक ताम्बा निकाला था ? इस सम्बन्ध में जिनका नाम लिया गया वे थे सराक । " मेजर टिकेल भी इनके विषय में लिखते हैं कि “एक समय सिंहभूम सराकों या श्रावकों के अधिकार में था ।" जबकि आज वह उनके हाथों से निकल चुका है । उस समय में वे वहाँ बहुत बड़ी संख्या में रहते थे और समृद्धिशाली भी थे ।

Mr. Bal के अनुसार “During the past season I have been engaged in an examination of a portion of country in which the copper-ores occur, Commencing to examine the copper bearing rocks at the foot of the Chhota Nagpar plateau and proceeding thence eastwards. I found that at nearly every point where traces of ore occured there were ancient found in every conceivable situation, at the top of hills, in valleys, in the thickest Jungles, and even in the middle of cultivation where the rocks are obscured by superficial deposits. My curiousity was aroused as to who the ancient miners could have been, who have left such imperishable evidence of their skill.
