चन्द्रगुप्त के समय यूनानी राजदूत मैगस्थनीज भारत आया था । वह चन्द्रगुप्त के दरबार में भी रहा उसने प्राच्य निवासियों के गुणों का वर्णन अपनी किताब 'इन्डिका' में किया है
"All the Indians are free and none of thems a slave. They do not even use aliens as slaves and much less a country man of their own.
They live frughally. They observe good order. Theft is a very rare occurrence. Their manners are simple. They have no suits about pledges or deposits. They confide in each other. Their houses and property they generally leave unguarded. They possess good, sober sense."
मैगस्थनीज इन वर्णनों से यह स्पष्ट होता है कि प्राच्य निवासियों कीं सभ्यता बहुत ही सुसंस्कृत, सुसंगठित और उच्चकोटि की थी । शायद इसीलिए ईर्ष्या के कारण ब्राह्मणों ने इन्हें अनार्य और असुर कहकर संबोधित किया है। जैन धर्म ने सदा से ही अहिंसा - सत्य-अचौर्य-ब्रह्मचर्य - अपरिग्रह आदि के सिद्धान्तों से भावप्रधान व आचारप्रधान संस्कृति का निर्माण कर शालीन सभ्यता को प्रोत्साहित किया है । द्वेष एवं कषायवश तथाकथित ब्राह्मण समाज ने जैन श्रमण जैन श्रावक जैन संस्कृति को उत्तरोत्तर • प्रतिपक्षी माना है ।

"All the Prachyas were considered by the Brahmanas as Asuras, the non-Aryan Bharatiya people. It was very difficult to establish the Brahmanjc Yagnic way of life in these Prachya. Asura regions. The concept Prachya, in the age of Megasthernes referred to the whole of the eastern Bharata. These Prachyas were anti- Brahmanical people." (Ancient India)
यहाँ ब्राह्मणों से तात्पर्य पतित ब्राह्मणों से है । ब्राह्मणों के वास्तविक स्वरूप के विषय में उत्तराध्ययन सूत्र के पच्चीसवें अध्याय में लिखा है कि "जिन्हें कुशल पुरुषों ने ब्राह्मण कहा है, जो स्वजनादि में आसक्त नहीं
