________________ 15 poem to indicate the glory or the glorious life of the hero. Thus Soma-saubhagyam describes the glorious life of Somasundara Suri. But here the word Saubhagya in Hira-Saubhagyam has a special significance as Saubhagya-Devi was the name of the author's mother. The poet has thus indicated his affection and respect for his mother by immortalising her name in the title of the epic. The avowed aim of the author was to describe the life of Hira-vijaya Suri (HV.). Hira-Saubhagya" is the name of the poem as can be seen from the last verse of every canto: · तद् ब्राह्मीक्रमसेविदेव विमलव्यावर्णिते हिरयुक्लौभाग्याभिधहीरस्रुरि चरिते सर्गों (Number of the sarga stated after this) Hira-vijaya Suri was the leader of the Tapāgachha in the 16 th. Cent. A. D He was greatly respected by the Moghul emperor Akbar who conferred on Suriji the title Jagad-guru' (The teacher of the world) The Ain-i-Akbarī and Akbarnāmā testify to the relations between Akbar and Suri.
