पानुप्त का परिचय दशपूर्वपर-काम : प्रार्य स्वममा शिक्षा दी जाती थी। विश्वविद्यालय के प्रतिरिक्तवहां एक शिक्षाशास्त्रीद्वारा स्वतन्त्ररूप से भी राजकुमारों को इस प्रकार का सैनिक प्रशिक्षण दिये जाने का जातक कथानों में विवरण उपलब्ध होता है। नालन्दा विश्वविद्यालय की सैनिक एकेडेमी में १०१ राजकुमार और स्वतन्त्र प्राध्यापक की शिक्षणशाला में १०३ राजकुमार उच्च सैनिक प्रशिक्षण प्राप्त करते रहते थे इस प्रकार का उल्लेख जातकों में है।
चाणक्य के समान उस समय के चोटी के विद्वान के लिये चन्द्रगुप्त को उपरिवरिणत दोनों शिक्षण संस्थानों में से किसी एक में प्रवेश दिला कर उच्च सैनिक प्रशिक्षण दिलवाना कोई कठिन कार्य नहीं था। ऐसी दशा में यह निश्चित रूप से कहा जा सकता है कि चाणक्य को मयूरपालकों के ग्राम में ज्यों ही प्रतिभाशाली वाक चन्द्रगुप्त मिला, त्यों ही वह उसे ले कर सीधा नालन्दा पहुंचा मोर वहां उस उसकी शिक्षा के लिये समुचित व्यवस्था की। हमारे इस अनुमान को ईसा की दूसरी शताब्दी में हुए पाश्चात्य लेखक जस्टिन द्वारा लिखित 'एपिटोम' (सारसंग्रह) के उस विवरण से बल मिलता है, जिसमें यह बताया गया है कि तत्कालीन यूनानियों के शासन का तख्ता उलट देने के लिये सैंडोकोट्टस (चन्द्रगुप्त) ने डाकुत्रों का दल एकत्रित कर के भारतवासियों को भड़काया। इसके कुछ समय पश्चात् जब वह सिकन्दर के सेनापतियों से लड़ने जा रहा था तो एक विशालकाय जंगली हाथी ने उसको पालतू हाथी की तरह अपनी पीठ पर बैठा लिया । वह हाथी युद्ध में चन्द्रगुप्त का पथप्रदर्शक बन गया और रणक्षेत्र में सदा बहुत मागे-आगे रहा ।'

When he was there, after preparing to attack. Alexander's prefects, a wild elephant of monstrous size approached him and kpccling submissively like tame elepham, received him on to its neck and fought vigorously in front of the army. Sandrocottus having thus won the throne, was reigning over India when Seluccus was laying the foundation of his future greatness. Seleucus having made a treat with him and otherwise settled his affairs in the cast, returned home to prosecute the war with Antigonous. - From
