ततस्तं तादृशं ज्ञात्वा संजातकरुणोदया। बमाण रमणी नाथ स्वल्पमेतत् समीहितम् ॥७०॥ ततः किंचिन्मधुस्वादविलासवशवर्तिनी । सा देवरमगोद्यानं जगाम कमलेक्षणा ।।७१॥ तदाज्ञां प्राप्य संपद्भिरष्टादशमहौजसाम् । दशाननवरस्त्रीणां सहस्राण्यनुवव्र जुः ॥७२॥ मन्दोदरी क्रमात्प्राप्य सीतामेवमभाषत । समस्तनयविज्ञानकृतमण्डनमानसा ॥७३।। अयि सुन्दरि हर्षस्य स्थाने कस्माद्विषीदसि । त्रैलोक्येऽपि हि सा धन्या पतिर्यस्या दशाननः ॥७४॥ सर्वविद्याधराधीशं पराजितसुराधिपम् । त्रैलोक्यसुन्दरं कस्मात्पतिं नेच्छसि रावणम् ॥७५।।
निःस्वःक्ष्मागोचरः कोऽपि तस्यार्थे दुःखितासि किम् ।
सर्वलोकवरिष्टस्य स्वस्य सौख्यं विधीयताम् ॥७६॥ आत्मार्थ कुर्वतः कर्म सुमहासुखसाधनम् । दोषो न विद्यते कश्चित्सर्व हि सुखकारणम् ।।७७॥ मयेति गदितं वाक्यं यदि न प्रतिपद्यते । ततो यद्भविता तत्ते शमिः प्रतिपद्यताम् ॥७८॥ बलीयान् रावणः स्वामी प्रतिपक्षविवर्जितः । कामेन पीडितः 'कोपं गच्छेप्रार्थनभञ्जनात् ॥७९॥ यौ रामलक्ष्मणौ नाम तव काववि संमतौ । तयोरपि हि सन्देहः ऋद्धे सति दशानने ।।८।। प्रतिपद्यस्व तत् क्षिप्रं विद्याधरमहेश्वरम् । ऐश्वयं परमं प्रासा'सौरी लीला समाश्रय ।।८१॥ इत्युक्ता वाष्पसंभारगद्गदोद्गीर्णवर्णिका । जगाद जानकी जातजललोचनधारिणी ।।८२॥ वनिते सर्वमेतत्ते विरुद्धं वचनं परम् । सतीनामीदर्श वक्त्रात्कथं निर्गन्तुमर्हति ॥८३।।
इदमेव शरीरं मे छिन्द भिन्दाथवा हत । भर्तुः पुरुषमन्यं तु न करोमि मनस्यपि ।।८।। क्योंकि घरके भस्म हो जानेपर कूप खुदानेका श्रम व्यर्थ है ।।६।।
तदनन्तर रावणको वैसा जान जिसे दया उत्पन्न हुई थी ऐसी मन्दोदरी बोली कि हे नाथ! यह तो बहुत छोटी बात है ॥७०।। तत्पश्चात् कुछ मधुर विलासोंकी वशवर्तिनी कमललोचना मन्दोदरी देवारण्य नामक उद्यानमें गयी ॥७२॥ उसकी आज्ञा पाकर रावणकी अठारह हजार पानवती स्त्रियां भी वैभवके साथ उसके पीछे चलीं ॥७२॥ समस्त नय-नीतियोंके विज्ञानसे जिसका मन अलंकृत था ऐसी मन्दोदरीने क्रम-क्रमसे सीताके पास जाकर इस प्रकार कहा ॥७३॥ कि हे सुन्दरि ! हर्षके स्थानमें विषाद क्यों कर रही हो ? वह स्त्री तीनों लोकोंमें धन्य है जिसका कि रावण पति है ||७४॥ जो समस्त विद्याधरोंका अधिपति है, जिसने इन्द्रको पराजित कर दिया है, तथा जो तीनों लोकोंमें अद्वितीय सुन्दर है ऐसे रावणको तुम पतिरूपसे क्यों नहीं चाहती हो ? ॥७५।। तुम्हारा पति कोई निर्धन भूमिगोचरी मनुष्य है सो उसके लिए इतना दुखी क्यों हो? सर्व लोकसे श्रेष्ठ अपने आपको सुखी करना चाहिए ॥७६।। अपने लिए महासुखके साधनभूत कार्यके करनेवालको कोई दोष नहीं है क्योकि मनुष्यके सब प्रयत्न सूखके लिए ही होते हैं ॥७७|| इस प्रकार मेरे द्वारा कहे हए वचन यदि तुम स्वीकृत नहीं करती हो तो फिर जो दशा होगी वह तुम्हारे शत्रुओंको प्राप्त हो ॥७८॥ रावण अतिशय बलवान् तथा शत्रुसे रहित है प्रार्थना भंग करनेपर वह कामपीड़ित हो क्रोधको प्राप्त हो जायेगा ॥७९॥ जो राम-लक्ष्मण नामक कोई पुरुष तुझे इष्ट हैं सो रावणके कुपित होनेपर उन दोनोंका भी सन्देह ही है ।।८०॥ इसलिए तुम शीघ्र ही विद्याधरोंके अधिपति रावणको स्वीकृत करो और परम ऐश्वर्यको प्राप्त हो देवों सम्बन्धी लीलाको धारण करो ॥८॥
इस प्रकार कहनेपर जिसके मुखसे वाष्पभारके कारण गद्गद वर्ण निकल रहे थे तथा जो अश्रुपूर्ण नेत्र धारण कर रही थी ऐसी सीता बोली कि हे वनिते! तेरे ये सब वचन अत्यन्त विरुद्ध है। पतिव्रता स्त्रियोंके मुखसे ऐसे वचन नहीं निकल सकते हैं ? ।।८२-८३।। मेरे इस शरीर१. कोऽयं । २. सुराणामियं सौरी तां देवसंबन्धिनीम् ।

Then, somewhat swayed by the allure of sweet pleasures, she, the lotus-eyed Mandodari, went to the Devaranya garden. ||71||

Upon receiving her command, eighteen thousand of Ravana's wives, adorned with splendor, followed her. ||72||

Mandodari, whose mind was adorned with the knowledge of all political strategies, approached Sita and spoke to her in this manner: ||73||

"Oh, beautiful one, why are you grieving instead of rejoicing? The woman whose husband is Ravana is blessed in all three worlds." ||74||

"Why do you not desire Ravana as your husband, he who is the lord of all the Vidyadharas, who has defeated Indra, and who is the most beautiful in all three worlds?" ||75||

"Is your husband some poor, landless man, that you are so distressed for him? You should make yourself happy, being the best of all beings." ||76||

"There is no fault in a person who acts for their own benefit, for all actions are meant for happiness." ||77||

"If you do not accept my words, then may the consequences befall your enemies." ||78||

"Ravana is very powerful and free from enemies. He will be filled with anger and desire if his request is denied." ||79||

"Even if those two men named Rama and Lakshmana are dear to you, there is doubt about them too, if Ravana is angered." ||80||

"Therefore, quickly accept the lord of the Vidyadharas, Ravana. Obtain supreme wealth and enjoy the divine play of the gods." ||81||

Thus spoken to, Sita, whose voice was choked with tears and whose eyes were filled with water, said: ||82||

"Oh, lady, all these words of yours are completely against the dharma. How can such words come from the mouth of a virtuous woman?" ||83||

"This body of mine, you may cut, you may break, you may kill. But I will not even think of another man as my husband." ||84||

"For, after the house is reduced to ashes, digging a well is a useless effort." ||86||
