दशमं पर्व
एवं तावदिदं वृतं तव श्रेणिक वेदितम् । अतः परं प्रवक्ष्यामि शृणु ते परमीहितम् ॥ १॥ हुताशनशिखस्यासीत् सुता 'ज्योतिःपुरे वरा । हीसंज्ञायां समुत्पन्ना योषिति स्त्रीगुणान्विता ॥२॥ सुतारेति गता ख्यातिं शोभया सकलावनौ । पद्मवासं परित्यज्य लक्ष्मीरिव समागता ||३|| चक्राङ्कतनयोऽपश्यत् पर्यटन् स्वेच्छयान्यदा । तां साहसगतिर्नाम्ना दुष्टोऽनुमतिसंभवः ||४|| ततोऽसौ कामशल्येन शल्यितोऽत्यन्तदुःखितः । सुतारां मनसा नित्यमुवाहोन्मत्तविभ्रमः ||५|| उपर्युपरि यातैश्च तां स दूतैरयाचत । सुग्रीवोऽपि तथैवैतां याचते स्म मनोहराम् ॥६॥ द्वैधीभावमुपेतेन हुताशनशिखेन च । पृष्टो मुनिर्महाज्ञानी निश्चयव्याकुलात्मना ॥७॥ उक्तं च मुनिचन्द्रेण न साहसगतिश्विरम् । जीविष्यति चिरायुस्तु सुग्रीवः परमोदयः ॥ ८ ॥ चक्रापक्षसंप्रीत्या हुताशस्तु विनिश्वयः । दीपौ वृषौ गजेन्द्रौ च निमित्तमकरोद् दृढम् ||९|| ततो मुनिगिरं ज्ञात्वा नियताममृतोपमाम् । सुग्रीवाय सुता दत्तानीय पित्रा समङ्गलम् ॥१०॥ कृत्वा पाणिगृहीतां तां सुग्रीवः पुण्यसंचयः । इयाय कामविषयं सारवत्तं सुसंपदम् ॥ ११॥ ततः क्रमात्तयोः पुत्रौ जातौ रूपमहोत्सवौ । ज्यायानङ्गोऽनुजस्तस्य प्रथितोऽङ्गदसंज्ञया ||१२||

अथानन्तर—— गौतमस्वामी राजा श्रेणिकसे कहते हैं कि हे श्रेणिक ! इस तरह तुमने बालीका वृत्तान्त जाना । अब इसके आगे तेरे लिए सुग्रीव और सुताराका श्रेष्ठ चरित कहता हूँ सो सुन ॥१॥ ज्योतिःपुर नामा नगर में राजा अग्निशिखकी रानी ह्री देवीके उदरसे उत्पन्न एक सुतारा नामकी कन्या थी । शोभासे समस्त पृथिवीमें प्रसिद्ध थी और ऐसी जान पड़ती थी मानो कमलरूपी आवासको छोड़कर लक्ष्मी ही आ गयी हो ॥२- ३ || एक दिन राजा चक्रांक और अनुमति रानीसे उत्पन्न साहसगति नामक दुष्ट विद्याधर अपनी इच्छासे इधर-उधर भ्रमण कर रहा था सो उसने सुतारा देखी ||४|| उसे देखकर वह कामरूपी शल्यसे विद्ध होकर अत्यन्त दु:खी हुआ । वह सुताराको निरन्तर अपने मनमें धारण करता था और उन्मत्त जैसी उसकी चेष्टा थी ||५|| इधर वह एकके बाद एक दूत भेजकर उसकी याचना करता था उधर सुग्रीव भी उस मनोहर कन्याको याचना करता था || ६ || 'अपनी कन्या दो में से किसे दूँ' इस प्रकार द्वैधीभावको प्राप्त हुआ राजा अग्निशिख निश्चय नहीं कर सका इसलिए उसकी आत्मा निरन्तर व्याकुल रहती थी । आखिर महाज्ञानी मुनिराज से पूछा ||७|| तब महाज्ञानी मुनिचन्द्रने कहा कि साहसगति चिरकाल तक जीवित नहीं रहेगा - अल्पायु है और सुग्रीव इसके विपरीत परम अभ्युदयका धारक तथा चिरायु है ||८|| राजा अग्निशिख, साहसगतिके पिता चक्रांकका पक्ष प्रबल होनेसे मुनिचन्द्र के वचनोंका निश्चय नहीं कर सका तब मुनिचन्द्रने दो दीपक, दो वृष और गजराजोंको निमित्त बनाकर उसे अपनी बातका दृढ़ निश्चय करा दिया ||९|| तदनन्तर मुनिराजके अमृत तुल्य वचनोंका निश्चय कर पिता अग्निशिखने अपनी पुत्री सुतारा लाकर मंगलाचारपूर्वक सुग्रीवके लिए दे दी ||१०|| जिसका पुण्यका संचय प्रबल था ऐसा सुग्रीव उस कन्याको विवाह कर बड़ी सम्पदाके साथ श्रेष्ठ कामोपभोगको प्राप्त हुआ ॥११॥ तदनन्तर सुग्रीव और सुताराके क्रमसे दो पुत्र उत्पन्न हुए। दोनों ही अत्यन्त सुन्दर थे । उनमें से बड़े पुत्रका नाम अंग था और छोटा पुत्र अंगदके नामसे प्रसिद्ध था ॥ १२॥ १. पर्व म. । २. द्योतिःपुरे म, ब । ३. दुष्टानुमति म. । ४. युक्तं च म । ५. नीत्वा म । ६. सुसंमदम् म., क., ख. ।

In Jyotipur, the daughter of the flame, a girl named Sutara was born from the womb of Queen Hrī. She was renowned throughout the earth for her beauty and seemed to have come straight from the abode of the lotus, like Lakshmi herself. ॥2-3॥

One day, the wicked Vidyadhara named Sahasagati, born of King Chakranka and Queen Anumati, was wandering about at his will and saw Sutara. ॥4॥

Upon seeing her, he was pierced by the arrow of desire and was immensely troubled. Mind always enveloped with the thought of Sutara, he behaved as if he were mad. ॥5॥

He sent messenger after messenger, pleading for her, while on the other side, Sugriva was also requesting the lovely maiden. ॥6॥

'To whom should I give my daughter?' With this doubt arising in him, King Agnishikha was unable to decide, and his soul remained in a state of turmoil. Finally, he inquired of the great sage. ॥7॥

The great sage Munichandra then spoke: "Sahasagati will not live long; he is of short life, while Sugriva, on the other hand, is of long life and bearer of supreme prosperity." ॥8॥

Due to the strength of the side of Chakranka, the father of Sahasagati, King Agnishikha could not resolve his doubts about Munichandra’s words. Then, Munichandra caused his words to be firmly established by taking two lamps, two bulls, and a royal elephant as a sign. ॥9॥

Afterward, knowing the words of the sage to be like nectar, King Agnishikha brought his daughter Sutara and, with auspicious rites, gave her to Sugriva. ॥10॥

Sugriva, whose merit was great, married the maiden and obtained abundant wealth along with excellent enjoyments of carnal pleasures. ॥11॥

Subsequently, Sugriva and Sutara had two sons in due course, both of whom were exceedingly handsome. The elder son was named Anga, and the younger son became renowned as Angada. ॥12॥
