In this major commentary and the support given to it, one can learn that Bhāṇugāmī seems to have used the designation "Gandhahastī" during his lifetime. It is not possible to definitively state the time in which he lived. However, it is clear that he must have existed between the seventh and ninth centuries. This is indicated by his references to several Buddhist scholars, including Vasubandhu in his commentary. Among them is a mention of Dharmakīrti, who belongs to the seventh century. Therefore, it is certain that he did not exist before the seventh century. On the other hand, the scholar Śīlānka, from the ninth century, refers to him by the name Gandhahastī. Hence, it can be surmised that he must have existed sometime before the ninth century.
The author of the commentary on the Naya Chakra, Siddhasena, was a disciple of the monk Siṃhasūri. Siṃhasūri lived during the middle of the seventh century, which marks the time of Siddhasena as the seventh century.
1. The well-known Buddhist scholar Vasubandhu is referred to by name in the commentaries, as evidenced in Tattvārthabhāṣya, p. 68, 5.1 and 29, and he is also mentioned in Nāgārjuna's work "Dharmasaṅgraha," p. 13. The references to five sins detailed in the commentary on Śīlāṅka Sūtra, as highlighted in the commentary on p. 215, are likewise noted by Siddhasena in his commentary, p. 67.
2. Bhikṣuvardharmakīrti also is not refuted in the discussion of the proofs, as noted in Tattvārthabhāṣya, p. 397, p. 4.
