Chapter 9 - Verse 39
Among the results that come from experience, which results are dependent on which cause, and for certain causes and certain results to think about them, that is 'the contemplation of the results.' To think about the nature of the attributes, that is 'the contemplation of the attributes.'
Swamitra: As a lord of the righteous contemplation, the Svetambara and Digambara traditions are not the same. According to the Svetambara belief, in the above verse, dharma meditation is present in the seventh, eleventh, and twelfth stages, as well as in the eighth and other mentioned virtues in three stages, that is to say, in six stages from the seventh to the twelfth. The Digambara tradition accepts that meditation is possible only in four stages, from the fourth to the seventh. Their argument is that right knowledge (samyak-darshana) has dharma meditation before the beginning of the causes, and because the series begins from the eighth stage, it does not accept that meditation exists in the eighth and earlier.
Now, it describes pure meditation: "Before the pure knowledge."
1. 'Before knowledge' refers to the aforementioned verse, and this verse cannot be otherwise, as stated by the commentators on the text. In the Digambara tradition, it also does not have a place as a fixed verse; therefore, it has also been kept here. Nevertheless, it is clear from the commentary that 'before knowledge' is indeed a fixed verse.
