Chapter 9 – Verses 21-22
Abandoning tastes that arise from substances like honey and butter is called ‘abandonment of taste’. 5. Living in a secluded place without disturbances is called ‘seclusion’. 6. Straining the body through cold, heat, or various postures is called ‘austerity of the body’.
Internal austerities: 1. A penance that can rectify faults arising from negligence in the observance of the vows is called ‘atonement’. 2. Holding great respect for virtuous qualities like knowledge is called ‘humility’. 3. Rendering services by providing means for spiritual practices or by engaging oneself in service is called ‘service-mindedness’. The difference between humility and service-mindedness is that humility is a mental virtue, while service-mindedness is a physical virtue. 4. Studying various subjects to gain knowledge is called ‘self-study’. 5. Abandoning attachment and aversion is called ‘renunciation’. 6. Abandoning distractions of the mind is called ‘meditation’.
Now the number of distinctions in atonement, etc. is stated as: "nine, fourteen, five, two distinctions" in accordance with the order of internal austerities. 21. Since the contemplation on meditation is extensive, only the number of distinctions of the prior atonement, etc., is presented here. 22. Now the distinctions of atonement are stated as: "critical examination, repentance, both discernment and renunciation, the cessation of austerities, and the establishment of observances."
