Chapter - Verses 19-20
363
The four characters of the initial vows are indeed of the nature of samayika; nevertheless, due to certain special qualities of conduct and virtues, they are described as distinct from samayika. 'Ivrika' means for a short period or 'Yavaskathika' refers to the vow taken for the entire life, which is 'Samayika.' 2. After taking the first vow, the vow taken again for special purity after studying particular scriptures is called 'Charitra' in addition to the first vow. The vow taken again due to the fault in the previously taken vow is also a new initiation, which is described as 'Heado' or 'Pothapana' in Charitra. The first is termed 'Nirritichara' and the second 'Sati-chara.' 3. The adherence to a special type of asceticism regarding conduct is called 'Pariharavishuddhi' in Charitra. 4. In which anger and other passions do not arise; only extremely subtle desires are present, is termed 'Sukshma-samparaya' Charitra. 5. Where no passions arise at all, is called 'Yathakhyata' or 'Vitaraag' Charitra. [18] Now it describes austerity:
Abandoning food,
Living with moderation,
Counting breaths,
Forsaking pleasures,
Sleeping on a solitary bed,
And physical discomfort,
These are external austerities. 19
Repentance, discipline, conduct, self-study,
Renunciation, meditation, and resolve! 20
