Tattvarthasutra
One should not feel pride due to knowledge of scriptures, nor should one hold self-esteem in the absence of it; this is the “knowledge” paryushana, or “ignorance” paryushana. 22. When the lack of perception of subtle and supersensory substances makes the accepted renunciation appear futile, then to maintain faith in wisdom and remain content in that situation is the “non-perception” paryushana. [9]. As for the supramundane, in which there is a very minimal possibility of attachment – in the state called subtle attachment, and in the states called upashantamukh and kshinamay, fourteen paryushanas can be established. These are thirst, cold, heat, tenth sense, movement, consciousness, ignorance, lack of gain, rest, increase, disease, touch of grass, and impurity. The remaining eight are not possible. The reason for this is that they are into a higher category, and there is a lack of higher connection in the eleventh and twelfth states. However, while delusion exists in the tenth state, it is so minimal that, even if present, it is not significant; therefore, in those states, one does not acknowledge the higher eight paryushanas, stating only the fourteen as possible.
In the thirteenth state, within the fourteen states, only eleven paryushanas are possible: thirst, cold, heat, tenth sense.
1. In the matter of paryushana in these two states, there is a difference of opinion between the Digambara and Svetambara traditions. This difference of opinion relies on whether or not everything understands a mere morsel. Thus, even while the Digambara commentaries accept this as a valid sutra, it appears that they interpret it in a way that convolutes its meaning. The interpretations are not uniform; two different interpretations have been made and both belong to the respective traditions.
