Chapter - Sutra 4-5
What is the form of gupti (guarding)? Samyag yoga nigraho gupti. 4. The restraint of the senses is gupti.
The restraint of all kinds of actions, including physical, verbal, and mental, is not gupti; rather, only that restraint which is praiseworthy becomes a method for samvara (self-control). Praiseworthy restraint means that which is understood and accepted with faith, i.e., controlling the mind, speech, and body from the wrong path and directing them towards the right path with understanding and faith. Since there are three types of yoga, there are also three types of restraint that form gupti. They are as follows:
1. Regulating physical activities such as sitting, standing, and moving, with awareness of duties and responsibilities is called "kayagupti."
2. Regulating speech in every circumstance and remaining silent when appropriate is called "vachangupti."
3. Abandoning wrongful intentions as well as mixed intentions involving good and bad, and embracing good intentions is called "managupti." [4]
Now, it describes the categories of samiti:
I-e-bhasha, aishana, adana-nikshepa, utsarga: samitayah. 5.
Samyam meaning faultless walking, right speech, right intention, right reception and laying down, and right relinquishment are the five samitis.
