Chapter 9
In the eighth chapter, the nature of bondage was described. Now, in this chapter, the sequential attainment of restraint is depicted. The first form of restraint is described as:
"Restraint is the obstruction of influx."
The definition of influx is given previously, wherein the karma bonds through the influx; to restrain such influx is called restraint. The 42 types of influx have been previously enumerated, and to the extent that obstruction occurs, to that extent, it is called restraint. Spiritual development is dependent on the progression of influx restraint; therefore, as the obstruction of influx increases, the levels of qualities (gunasthanas) rise. [1] - 1.
