તત્વાર્થસૂત્ર આઠ મૂળ પ્રકૃતિના અનુક્રમે પાંચ, નવ, બે, અઠ્ઠાવીશ, ચાર, બેંતાલીશ, બે અને પાંચ ભેદો છે. જ મતિ વગેરે પાંચ જ્ઞાનેના આવરણે એ પાંચ જ્ઞાનાવરણ છે.
ચક્ષુદ્ર્શન અચક્ષુર્દર્શન, અવધિદર્શન અને કેવલદર્શનનાં ચાર આવરણે; તથા નિદ્રા, નિદ્રાનિદ્રા, પ્રચલા, પ્રચલપ્રચલા અને ત્યાનગૃદ્ધિ એ પાંચ વેદનીય એમ નવ દર્શનાવરણીય છે.
પ્રશસ્ત-સુખદનીય અને અપ્રશસ્ત–દુઃખદનીય એ બે વેદનીય છે.
દર્શનમેહ, ચારિત્રમેહ, કષાયવેદનીય અને નેકષાયવેદનયના અનુક્રમે ત્રણ, બે, સેળ અને નવ ભેદ છે, જેમ કે સમ્યકત્વ, મિથ્યાત્વ, તદુભય – સમ્યકત્વમિફત્વ એ ત્રણ દર્શનમેહનીય. કષાય અને નેકષાય એ બે ચારિત્રમેહનીય. ક્રોધ, માન, માયા અને લેભ એપ્રત્યેક અનંતાનુબંધી, અપ્રત્યાખ્યાનાવરણ પ્રત્યાખ્યાનાવરણ અને સંજ્વલનરૂપે ચાર ચાર પ્રકારના હાઈ એ સેળ કષાયચારિત્રમોહનીય. હાસ્ય, રતિ, અરતિ, શેક, ભય, જુગુપ્સા, સ્ત્રીવેદ, પુરુષવેદ અને નપુંસકવેદ એ નવ નેકષાયચારિત્રમેહનીય છે.
