The Tattvarthasutra contains eight fundamental categories, which are divided into five, nine, two, eighteen, four, thirty-two, two, and five distinctions in sequence. The five types of knowledge encompassing perception, etc., relate to those five knowable categories. There are four aspects of knowledge: eye perception, non-eye perception, telepathic perception, and omniscience; as well as five knowable conditions: sleep, dreamless sleep, fainting, deep fainting, and delirium.
The two that can be perceived are the good and pleasant, and the bad and painful. According to perception, character, kashaya (passion), and non-kashaya, there are three, two, four, and nine distinctions, respectively, such as right perception, falsehood, and the duality of right perception and falsehood. Kashaya and non-kashaya comprise two characteristics of conduct. Anger, pride, deceit, and greed each relate to four kinds: infinite entanglement, non-repudiation, repudiation, and its manifestation form, making them four kinds of conduct linked to kashaya. Laughter, love, aversion, hesitation, fear, disgust, the female aspect, the male aspect, and the neuter aspect comprise nine aspects of non-kashaya conduct.
There are four types of life related to hellish beings, animals, humans, and divine beings.
