Tattvarthasutra
Restraining oneself from food and drink is the renunciation of sustenance. These five faults, the householder who observes vows should avoid any engagement, as they lead to abandonment; however, regarding the duties of household life, certain engagements must be undertaken, and hence he should act with a proper livelihood. Excesses of the vow of truth: 1. Explaining "true and false" to draw people away from the right path is "false preaching." 2. Motivated by attachment, to part a husband and wife or other loved ones, or to create animosity between one and another, is "secretive interpretation." 3. Making counterfeit documents through forgery, counterfeit currency, etc., is "forged writing." 4. Taking advantage of someone’s mistake to obtain lower quality goods is "a deceitful acquisition." 5. To break a bond of affection between individuals or to disclose someone’s private matters, is "the division of supportive mantras." [21]
Excesses of the vow of non-stealing: 1. To encourage someone to steal, either personally or through others, or to agree to such actions, is "breach of trust." 2. Accepting stolen goods, whether by personal invitation or without consensus, is "illicit acceptance." 3. Violating the restrictions imposed by different states on the import and export of goods, or the regulations regarding taxes and levies on those goods, is "contravention of state law." 4.
