Tattvartha Sutra
1. Remove the activity of sensuality. 2. As long as greed is not removed, one should not seek one's own object of greed through unjust means, nor should one think of obtaining another's object of greed without permission. [10]
Now the nature of Abrahma is stated: "Mithunam Abrahma." | 11 |
The activity of sensuality is Abrahma.
Mithun means the activity of copulation. The word 'Mithun' is commonly known to refer to the pairing of male and female; however, here it is intended to be slightly extended. Pairing refers to male-female, male-male, or female-female, and it can be of the same species (humans, etc.) or different species (humans, animals, etc.). The mental, verbal, or physical activities arising from the attachment of desire for such pairings are called Mithun, i.e., Abrahma.
Q—Where there is no pairing, if just one individual, either male or female, engages in sexual activity through attachment to a tangible object using their hands or other limbs, can it still be called Mithun according to the above definition?
Achar—Their true essence of mithun is only as much as any action arising from the desire of sensual attachment. This thus applies to the wrongful act of any one individual; therefore, it is still called Mithun.
