Tattvarthasutra
However, to eliminate the true defects of the mind that arise from gross life due to desire and from the other defects such as attachment and aversion that arise from it, one must continually strive.
Q: What is the meaning of the fault of violence mentioned above? A: The defect of violence is that which leads to the diminished purity of the mind, increased rigidity, and results in the desire for gross life; and that which does not lead to the increase of said rigidity, yet leads to a slight loving disposition and does not interfere at all with introspective life, is the defect of violence even if it appears so.
Now the nature of falsehood is:
असदभिधानमनृतम् । 9। To call something false is to describe it as non-true.
Although in the Sutra mention of falsehood is made, its meaning is vast, encompassing misthinking and misconduct within it. Therefore, to think falsely, to act falsely, and to behave falsely all fall within this same category of falsehood. Just as there is a definition of violence, there is also one for falsehood and definitions of other faults such as non-giving. It should be understood that false statements made with a negligent mindset result in this false defect.
1. Do not add an adjective "negligent" in the context of non-brāhman; because such defects cannot exist in a state of non-negligence. Therefore, celibacy has been said to be faultless; for further clarification, please refer to the prohibition titled "Jain Dṛṣṭi and Brahmacharya" published in this collection.
