Chapter - Sutra 8 What is the reason for including the destruction of life in the definition of violence?
U - The abandonment of carelessness is indeed a form of violence, yet it is often sudden and largely impossible to renounce within the community. Therefore, although the destruction of life is gross, its renunciation is desirable for the well-being of communal life; it is also largely possible in comparison. Even if there is no free pass to avoid gross life destruction, often peace and happiness prevail in communal life. According to the progression of non-violence, initially, renouncing gross destruction becomes possible within the community, and gradually renouncing carelessness can also occur. Hence, even though the renouncement of violence in the form of carelessness is desired as a spiritual aspirant, the gross destruction of life is acknowledged within the concept of violence and is also included in its renunciation.
P - The scriptures have termed this as violence, thus understanding that renunciation from this is non-violence; but what obligations arise for one who takes a vow of such non-violence in order to build a life?
