If specific favorable activities are not undertaken with particular care, then merely accepting vows does not lead to their internalization. Therefore, to ensure that the accepted vows deeply penetrate life, several activities have been prescribed that should align with each vow, which are popularly known as feelings. When these feelings are properly applied, the vows taken yield excellent results for a diligent individual, much like a potent medicine. The feelings, in order, are as follows:
1. The five feelings associated with the vow of non-violence are: general compassion, secrecy, detachment from desires, charity, and moderate consumption of food.
2. The five feelings related to the vow of truthfulness are: accurate speech, renunciation of anger, renunciation of profit, regularity, and renunciation of jest.
3. The five feelings associated with the vow of non-stealing are: seeking permission before taking, constant seeking of approval, holding firm on consent, seeking permission from a proper person, and gentle consumption of food when permitted.
4. The five feelings related to the vow of celibacy include: avoidance of contact with women, animals, and eunuchs; avoiding engaging in pleasure, renouncing the attraction to a woman’s charm; recalling the initial delight of relations; and enjoying a lawful meal.
5. The five feelings associated with the vow of non-possessiveness involve: maintaining equanimity toward touch, taste, smell, sight, and sound.
