271 Self-discipline, non-desire renunciation, and childlike austerities, one should reflect on all these. [Even if one accepts self-discipline to remove the grass-like causes of the world, when the mental impressions of attachment have not diminished, that self-discipline is called 'self-interested self-discipline.' If one accepts a little self-discipline, it is called 'pure self-discipline.' The renunciation of pleasures not from desire but out of compulsion is termed 'non-desire renunciation.' Austerities such as penance, suffering from fire immersion, water immersion, eating leaves, and fasting of a false believer who lacks true knowledge is called 'childlike austerity.] 5 'Calmness is the suppression of defects like anger through a religious perspective. 6. The restraint of base tendencies and similar afflictions is 'purity.' [13]
