Chapter 5 - Sutra 12-16
203
The position of Dharma and Adharma substances exists throughout the infinite space.
The position of Pudgala substance is in a certain region of that space, hence it is variable and irregular.
The position of Jiva exists in an innumerable number of sections.
Just as a lamp expands and contracts in its region,
the universe has five categories of substance. Therefore, the question arises: what is the supportive field for these five substances? Is there some other substance that serves as their basis, distinct from them? Or is one of these five substances the support for the others? The answer to this question is that space itself is the support, and all other substances depend upon it. This answer should be understood from a practical perspective, not from an absolute standpoint. All substances are situated in their own essence; one substance cannot exist in another from a metaphysical perspective. Now, the question arises: just as the four substances including Dharma are considered to be supported by space from a practical perspective, what is the support for space itself? The answer is that space is not supported by any other substance. There is no other element that has dimensions larger than or equal to those of space. Hence, from both the practical and absolute perspective, space is self-established. Space cannot be supported by anything else.
