Tattvarthasutra
The substance (dravya) is eternal, stable, and formless. The substance in the form of Pugala (matter) is a form.
Among the five substances, those that extend to the sky are one by one.
And they are inactive.
The five substances stated in Dharmastikaya are eternal, meaning they never deviate from their common and specific forms. They are also stable because their count can never decrease. The formless substances are only those four: Dharma-stikaya, Adharma-stikaya, Akasha-stikaya, and Jiva-stikaya; however, Pugala is not formless. In summary, eternalness and stability are characteristics of the five substances; but excluding the formless Pugala, the other four substances share these characteristics.
Q: What is the difference between eternalness and stability?
A: The notion of eternalness is when a father (substance) is not remembered in its common and specific forms, and stability refers to the father remaining in its form while not acquiring the form of another element.
