Chapter 5.
From the second to the fourth chapter, the nature of the living entity has been described. Now, in this chapter, the nature of the non-living entity is described.
First, the distinctions of the non-living entities are stated: "Non-living entities are Dharma, Adharma, Ether, and Pudgala."
According to the rules of the descriptive methodology, the first characteristic should be mentioned followed by the distinctions; however, the author has stated the distinctions of the non-living entities without showing their characteristics. The reason for doing this is that the characteristic of the non-living can be understood through the characteristic of the living. There is no particular need to define it separately; because "a + jiva" means that which is not a living entity is non-living. The inessential is the characteristic of the living, while that which lacks utility is the essence of the non-living entity.
