7. The Jain Agama "Uttaradhyayana" is traditionally considered to predate the sutras of Kanada. The sutras of Kanada are popularly believed to have originated before the common era. In the texts of Tattvarthasutra based on Jain Agama, there are three sutras in which, in addition to the shadow of Uttaradhyayana, elements from the Kanada sutras are visible. Among these three sutras, the first pertains to substance, the second to quality, and the third to time.
In chapter 28, stanza 6 of Uttaradhyayana, the definition of substance states, "Gumasayo vyasamashrayo dravyam!" which means that which has qualities as support is substance. In Kanada’s definition of substance, in addition to qualities, action and co-existence are included, stating, “Triputa sakavayimiti vyaksh,” which means “that which is active, possesses qualities, and is co-existent causes is substance.” The reader, maintaining Uma Swami’s definition of qualities as stated in Uttaradhyayana, replaces the word for action appearing in Kanada's sutras with the term from Jain tradition "paryaya," and constructs the definition of substance as “Gunapatra vyasam,” which means that which has qualities and transformations is substance.
