Chapter 4 - Sutras 8-10
Devatas up to Ishana are considered as those that derive pleasure from worldly objects through the physical body. The remaining devatas, Dhruva and others, enjoy worldly pleasures through forms, sounds, and thoughts in a sequential manner within their respective realms. All other devatas exist without any understanding, meaning they are devoid of any worldly happiness.
The celestial beings, individuals from different realms like Bhavanapati, Vyantara, Jyotishika, and the first and second celestial beings, experience pleasures similar to humans and attain happiness. However, the celestial beings from the third heaven and above do not indulge in worldly pleasures through physical sensations; instead, they experience sensual pleasures in different ways. For instance, the devatas from the third and fourth heavens achieve calmness of sensual desires merely by the touch of celestial maidens and experience happiness. The devatas from the fifth and sixth heavens gain worldly happiness merely by seeing the beautiful forms of the maidens. The devatas from the seventh and eighth heavens find peace by hearing various sounds from the celestial maidens, and the sensations of worldly pleasures arise merely from contemplating the maidens of the ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth, meaning the devatas from the four heavens. Their expectations do not include the touch of a maiden or the experience of seeing or hearing. In short, the joy experienced here is purely indicative of worldly satisfaction. This indicates that worldly gratification exists solely for the attainability of this happiness.
