Chapter 3 - Sutra 7-18 It is stated that there are forty people high; and the length-width is measured at twelve agents at the bottom, eight agents in the middle, and four at the top.
In Jambudvipa, there are primarily seven regions. They are called 'Vansh', 'Varsh', or 'Vas'. The first is Bharat; it is to the south. To the north of Bharat is Himalaya, to the north of Himalaya is Hari, to the north of Hari is Videha, to the north of Videha is Ramyaka, to the north of Ramyaka is Hiranvat, and to the north of Hiranvat is Airavat. According to the rules of directional validity, Mount Meru is located in the northern part of the seven regions.
To separate the seven regions, there are six mountains in between; they are called "Varshadhar." All of them stretch from east to west. The Himavan mountain lies between Bharat and the Himalaya region; the grand Himavan separates the Himalaya and Hari varsh; the Nishadh mountain separates Hari varsh and Videha; the Nil mountain is between Videha and Ramyaka; the Rukmi mountain separates Ramyaka and Hiranvat; and the Shikhari mountain separates Hiranvat and Airavat.
1. The rule of direction is dependent on the rising and setting of the sun. Standing facing the east, to the left side in the northern direction is Mount Meru. The direction of sunset in Bharat is where the sunrise is in Airavat. Therefore, even there, the sunrise occurs further up or down than Mount Meru, which lies in the northern direction. Thus, in other regions as well, the northward position of Meru should be understood.
