Chapter 3 - Sutra 149 The Condition of Beings: The condition of beings in each mode presents two types of lifespan limits, inferior and superior. What cannot be less than this is inferior and what cannot be more than this is superior. Here, only the superior condition of the Naraka is described. The inferior condition will be elaborated later. In the first, there is the superior condition equivalent to one sea, in the second to three, in the third to seven, in the fourth to ten, in the fifth to fourteen, in the sixth to twenty-two, and in the seventh to thirty-three seas.
Up to this point, the description of the downward realms generally concludes. Two specific points should be particularly noted: the evolution and the potentiality of beings in the states of being.
1. It is understood: Asensient beings can only be reborn in the first realm and not further; beings with limbs can exist up to the first two realms, birds can extend to three realms, lions to four realms, serpents to five realms, females to six realms, and fish and humans can exist up to seven realms. In summary, only Tiryanch and humans can be born in the Naraka realm; gods and Narakas cannot, due to their lack of such associations. A Naraka being does not immediately get reborn into the Naraka mode; nor do they instantly attain the divine mode; they can only be born in the Tiryanch and human modes.
