Tattvarthasutra
Thus, they see one another and fight like dogs, they quarrel and meet with anger; therefore, they are called mutually suffering beings. [4]
S.
Three types of pain are considered in hell; among them, the pain arising from inherent nature and that arising from mutuality is described later. The third type of pain is generated by the supreme-dharma. The first two types of pain are common in the seven hells, but the third type of pain exists only in the first three hells, as it pertains to the supreme-dharma. The supreme-dharma pertains to a type of cruel asura (demon) that is highly vicious and sinful. Their types include those like Amba and Ambarisha, among others. They are naturally so ruthless and curious that they take pleasure in tormenting others; therefore, they continuously inflict pain on the beings in hell through various forms of torture. They make them fight like dogs, pandas, and mallows, and witnessing them fight or beat each other brings them great joy. Although these supreme-dharma beings are a type of demon, they also possess other means of happiness. However, due to profound and severe faults caused by previous births, they remain happy only when tormenting others. The poor beings in hell, being utterly defenseless, spend their whole lives undergoing intense suffering. There may be many pains, but the beings in hell have no refuge, and due to the unchangeable nature of their lifespan, their lives do not come to an end quickly. [5]
