The Tattvaartha Sutra states that birth in hell lasts from the time of birth until death. When there are four, they are Tejas, Kaaman, Daarik, and Vaikriya, or they are Tejas, Kaarman, Daarik, and Aahaarak. The first option is found among some humans and Tiryaanch when the Vaikriya fruit is in effect; while the second option is present only among the Chandragupta Munis during the Aahaarakalabdhika fruit. Five bodies do not exist together at the same time; because it is not possible for the use of Vaikriya and Aahaarakalabdha to occur simultaneously.
Question: How can a single soul relate to three or four bodies at the same time?
Answer: Just as a single lamp can cast its light on many objects at once, so a single soul can be interconnected with multiple bodies simultaneously.
Question: Is there ever a time when someone has only one body?
Answer: No. The general principle is that Tejas and Kaarman bodies are never separate; therefore, it is never possible for someone to have only one body. However, some Acharyas believe that the Tejas body is not like the Kaarman body in regards to worldly connections; rather, it is a product of the Aahaarak body. According to that interpretation, the interstice is mentioned in the commentary; see A. 2, 44.
