According to the Tattvarthasutra, when a soul experiences rebirth, it acquires a new lifespan and the momentum of karmas at the moment it sheds its previous body. For souls with a curved motion, a new lifespan, movement, and a duration of name karma arise, as much as possible, at the first curved positioning, because the previous biomechanical lifespan and other factors continue to arise only until the first curved position. In the text regarding non-physical beings, for souls in an intermediate state, the question of sustenance does not arise; as they are subtle and devoid of any physical body. However, for worldly souls, sustenance is a concern since they must possess a subtle body even in an intermediate state. Sustenance refers to the absorption of physical elements (pudgala) into the subtle body. Such sustenance occurs during the intermediate state of worldly souls but may not always be present. Souls that are in a constant motion or are in a situation of dual temporal activity are not categorized as sustenance-less, because at the moment they relinquish their previous body, they simultaneously obtain a new position, and no interval occurs. Therefore, they have a time associated with the absorption of sustenance through the previous body's phases or the sustenance obtained in the new birthplace. The same condition applies to souls in situations of dual temporal activity; because, from the two times, the first time pertains to sustenance gained from the previous body, and the second time relates to arriving at the new source of birth, where sustenance is consumed for taking on a new body.
