Chapter 1 - Sutra 3-31
109 Another is not a gross body. Since there is no gross body at that time, it is not related to me and the language of utterance either. [26]
It is stated: There are only two types of substances that are in motion: living beings and non-living entities. Both of them possess the power of motion. Therefore, when they receive a cause, they become engaged in motion and start moving. They may move in a crooked path due to external factors, but their natural motion is straight. The term 'straight motion' means that from the earlier position in the space, the living being or atom moves upward, downward, or diagonally along a simple line within the same space. With regard to this natural motion, it is stated in the sutra that motion is conditional. The condition refers to a straight line that is equal in length, without being less or more than the previous position—this line is parallel and straight. From the description of this natural motion, it is suggested that when there is an obstructive cause, the living being or non-living entity can abandon the straight line and also move in a curved path. In summary, the motion of dynamic substances occurs along a simple straight line when there is no obstructive cause, and it occurs along a curved line when there is an obstructive cause. [27]
It was previously stated that motion is of two types: straight and crooked. Straight motion is when there is no disruption to the straight line from the previous position to the new position; in other words, no deviation is taken. Crooked motion is when...
