Chapter 2 - Sutra 21-22

Names of the senses: 1. Touch - skin, 2. Taste - tongue, 3. Smell - nose, 4. Sight - eyes, 5. Hearing - ears. These five have four types: perception, determination, instrument, and use. That is, each of these four types forms a complete sense, which is the aggregate of touch and the rest. The lesser the completeness in that aggregate, the lesser the sense's perfection. The pre-use is the special knowledge and it is the fruit of that sense. How can it be called a sense?
- Even though in reality, use is the function of the aggregate of perception, deterrence, and instrument, here it is treated by attributing the cause to the action, but it is also called a sense. [15-20] Now regarding the senses, it is said:
"Touch, taste, smell, color, and sound are their meanings." 21.
The non-sense - mind - is the subject of sound.
Not all objects in the world are the same. Some are concrete and some are abstract. Those that have color, smell, taste, touch, etc., are concrete. Only concrete objects can be known.
