Chapter 2 – Verses 15-20
Thus, there are three types of sense organs: the one that is a sense organ is the dual sense, the four-sensed, and the five-sensed being differentiated as worldly souls.
Q—What is a sense organ?
A—A sense organ is that through which knowledge can be attained.
Q—Aren't there more than five sense organs?
A—No, in knowledge, there are only five. Although in Sankhya and other scriptures, they include speech, hands, feet, excretory organ, and reproductive organ as sense organs, those are inferior. Here, only the knowledge senses are indicated, which are not more than five.
Q—What is the difference between knowledge sense organs and action sense organs?
A—The knowledge sense organ is that which primarily helps in the journey of life and provides knowledge; and, that which aids in the activities of life such as eating, moving, looking, etc., is the action sense organ.
Both in terms of substance and essence, there are two distinctions of the five sense organs. The sense organ that is material and composed of pudgala is termed 'substance sense'; and the sense organ that results from the soul is termed 'essence sense.'
Regarding the sense organs, 'substance sense' is related to withdrawable and 'instrument' form. The physical form of the sense organ visible on the body has specific constructs of pudgala, termed 'withdrawable sense'; and the pudgala power present within and outside the withdrawable sense that prevents the withdrawable sense from generating knowledge is termed 'instrument sense.'
