Chapter 2 – Verse 8 is meant to indicate the same matter. In the Digambara tradition, this meaning is derived from the word "cha." [1-7] Now it describes the characteristics of the soul:
The characteristic of life is the use.
The soul, which is also called the self and consciousness, is an eternal (independent) substance. From a metaphysical perspective, its knowledge is not obtained through the senses, but can be achieved through self-awareness and inference, among other means. Nevertheless, for a general inquisitive person, it should show a characteristic through which the self can be recognized. This is indicated in the present verse. The self is the object of knowledge; and the characteristic of use is a means of knowledge. The world is a mixture of many material and conscious substances. The distinction between the material and the conscious can be determined through use; because, in a reflective manner, use is certainly found in all souls, whereas it is completely absent in the material.
Q: What is use?
A: Use is formless transaction.
Q: Why does the process of bondage occur in the soul and not in the material?
