Tattvartha Sutra
What can be known can also grasp the complete essence of the substances involved, and that knowledge is called perfect knowledge. That is called Kevalajñāna. This knowledge manifests at the full development of conscious power; therefore, there are no imperfections or distinctions. There is nothing, or no essence, that can’t be directly known through it. For this reason, the activity of Kevalajñāna is prohibited in all substances and all modifications. [27–30]
Description of knowledge attained in one soul: ekādīni bhājyāni yugapade kasminna chaturbhyaḥ | 31 | In one soul, knowledge from one to four occurs simultaneously and irregularly.
In one soul, at one time there can be one, in some there can be two, in some there can be three, and in some there can be four kinds of knowledge occurring together; however, five types of knowledge cannot occur simultaneously. When there is one, then Kevalajñāna should be understood, because in the state of perfect knowledge, it is not possible for other imperfect knowledge to exist at that time. When there is one, there will be mental and scriptural knowledge; because among the five types of knowledge, that knowledge is the only one that is constant. The other three can exist independently. When three types of knowledge are present, there are mental, scriptural, and avadhi knowledge, or mental, scriptural, and manahparyāya knowledge, because the three types of knowledge exist only in an imperfect state, and at such times, whether it is avadhi knowledge or manahparyāya knowledge, mental and scriptural knowledge must certainly exist.
