Chapter 1 - Sutra 13
In which places has 'Mati Jnana' been mentioned directly? It should be understood in light of the earlier stated characteristics of the logical scripture based on worldly perspective. Now, what synonyms are said to be equivalent to 'Mati Jnana'? The words Mati, Smriti, Samjna, Chinta, and Abhinibandha are synonymous terms.
Question - Which knowledge is referred to as Mati Jnana?
Answer - The knowledge that pertains to current subjects.
Question - Are Smriti, Samjna, and Chinta also related to current subjects?
Answer - No. The memory of something experienced in the past is called 'Smriti'; thus, it pertains to past subject matter. The cognition of the identity of something experienced in the past and experiencing currently is called 'Samjna' or 'Pratyabhijna'; therefore, it pertains to both past and current subjects. And 'Chinta' refers to contemplation on future subjects; thus, it pertains to future matters.
Question – By saying this, Mati, Smriti, Samjna, and Chinta cannot be synonymous terms; because they have different meanings.
