અમારી વિશાળ જના પ્રમાણે અમે કામ શરૂ કર્યું, અને ઈષ્ટ સહાયકે આવતા ગયા. પણ તેઓ આવી સ્થિર થાય તે પહેલાં જ એકે એકે પાછા જુદી જુદી દિશાઓમાં પંખીઓની પેઠે વીખરાઈ ગયા અને છેવટે એ આગ્રાના માળખામાં હું એકલે જ રહી ગયે. “તત્વાર્થ'નું આરંભેલ કાર્ય અને બીજાં કાર્યો મારા એકલાથી થવાં શક્ય જ ન હતાં, અને તે ગમે તે રીતે કરવાં એ નિશ્ચય પણ ચૂપ બેસી રહેવા દે તેમ ન હતો. સંયોગ અને મિત્રોનું આકર્ષણ જોઈ હું આગ્રા છોડી અમદાવાદ આવ્યા. ત્યાં મેં સન્મતિતર્કનું કામ હાથમાં લીધું અને તત્વાર્થનાં બે ચાર સૂત્રે ઉપર આગ્રામાં જે લખેલું તે એમ ને એમ પડયું રહ્યું.
ભાવનગરમાં ઈ. સ. ૧૯૨૧-૨૨માં સન્મતિતર્કનું કામ કરતો ત્યારે વચ્ચે વચ્ચે તત્વાર્થનું અધૂરું રહેલું કામ મનમાં આવતું અને મન વ્યાકુલ કરી મૂકતું. માનસિક સામગ્રી છતાં જોઈતા સહાયક મિત્રોને અભાવે મેં “તત્ત્વાર્થ'ના વિવેચનની પ્રથમ નક્કી કરેલ વિશાળ જના મનમાંથી દૂર કરી અને તેટલે ભાર ઓછો કર્યો, પણ એ કામને નાદ છૂટો જ ન હતો. તેથી તબિયતના કારણે જ્યારે વિશ્રાંતિ લેવા ભાવનગરની પાસેના વાત્સુકડ ગામમાં ગમે ત્યારે પાછું “તત્ત્વાર્થનું કામ હાથમાં લીધું અને તેની વિશાળ જનાને ટૂંકાવી મધ્યમ માર્ગે કામ શરૂ કર્યું. એ વિશ્રાંતિ દરમિયાન જુદે જુદે સ્થળે રહી કંઈક લખ્યું. એ વખતે લખાયું પણ તેની પદ્ધતિ મનમાં નિશ્ચિત થઈ ગઈ અને એકલે હાથે પણ ક્યારેક લખી શકવાને વિશ્વાસ ઉત્પન્ન થયે.
