Mahavir Foundation is a religious organisation whose primary objective is the promotion of Jain values in the UK It organises Paryushan and different types of poojans each year for its 400 members. Its recent achievements include a small temple in Harrow that is visited by some 350 visitors each week. Our ambition is to build a proper Shikharbandhi temple in London in near future.

દસ વર્ષની વિકાસયાત્રા
મહાવીર ફાઉન્ડેશનના પ્રારંભકાળથી આજસુધીની પ્રવૃત્તિઓના સાક્ષી રહેવાનું મને સદભાગ્ય સાંપડયું છે. એના ટ્રસ્ટીઓએ અથાગ પરિશ્રમ કરીને આ પ્રવૃત્તિઓ વિકસાવી છે અને તેને પરિણામે આજે આ સંસ્થા લંડનના કેન્ટન રોડ પર પોતાનું આગવુ દેરાસર ધરાવે છે. દરેક સંસ્થાનની પાછળ એક ભેખધારી હોય છે તે રીતે આ સંસ્થાના કાર્યો પાછળ શ્રી વિનોદભાઈએ અથાગ પરિશ્રમ ઉઠાવ્યો છે.. આ સંસ્થાએ દરેક કાર્યક્રમો ખુબજ જહેમતથી કર્યા છે. તે મેં નજરો નજર નિહાળ્યું છે. પૂજાઓ – પર્યુષણ પર્વની આરાધના અને બીજા કાર્યક્રમો અત્યારે તેના દ્વારા સુંદર રીતે ચાલી રહ્યા છે.
એક્વીસમી સદી અહિંસાની સદી બને તે માનવજાતની આજની સૌથી મોટી જરૂરિયાત છે. ભગવાન મહાવીરના અહિંસા, સત્ય અનેકાન્ત જેવા સિધ્ધાંતોની આજના જગતને વિશેષ જરૂર છે. ત્યારે મહાવીર ફાઉન્ડેશન એના દશાબ્દી વર્ષની ઉજવણી કરીને આવતી કાલના વિશ્વને અહિંસાનો સંદેશો વધુને વધુ પહોંચાડશે. દશાબ્દીના પ્રસંગે મારી અંતરની શુભેચ્છાઓ સ્વીકારશો.

મહાવીર ફાઉન્ડેશનનો સંક્ષિપ્ત ઇતિહાસ
મહાવીર ફાઉન્ડેશનની શુભ સ્થાપના દશ વર્ષ પહેલાં થઈ હતી. આ સ્થાપના પાછળનો ટૂંક ઈતિહાસ આ પ્રમાણે છે. અમે થોડા મિત્રો શ્રી હસમુખભાઈ ગાર્ડીને ત્યાં એનપોરમાં નિયમિત મળતાં હતાં અને ખાસ તો પર્યુષણ પ્રસંગે સાથે મળીને પ્રતિક્રમણ કરતાં હતાં. આમ બે ત્રણ વર્ષ ચાલ્યું અને અમે સહુ એકબીજાની વધારે નજીક આવ્યાં હતાં. આમાંના મુખ્ય નામો આ પ્રમાણે છે- શ્રી હસમુખભાઈ ગાર્ડ, શ્રી ચીફ મંડારી, શ્રી મનસુખભાઈ શાહ, શ્રી પ્રવિણભાઈ શાહ, અને શ્રી વિનોદ કપાસી તથા શ્રી નરોત્તમ શાહ, શ્રી પ્રકાશભાઈ શાહ, મિલનભાઈ વિરાણી વગેરે હતાં. આમાં શ્રી વનમાળીભાઈ મહેતા, સુરેશભાઈ કોઠારી, પરેશભાઈ મહેતા, ઉદય શાહ પણ સામેલ થયાં હતાં. આ બધા સભ્યો સાથે તેમના કુટુંબીજનો પણ સક્રિય ભાગ લેતાં હતાં. આ રીતે શુભ પ્રસંગોની ઉજવણી થતી હતી. આ બાદ અમને લાગ્યું કે પર્યુષણ દરમ્યાન જે કંઈ નાનકડી રકમ ભેગી થતી હતી તે માટે બેંકમાં ખાતુ ખોલાવવાની જરૂર છે. આથી અમે જિનાલય સમિતિના નામથી ખાતુ ખોલાવ્યું હતું.
પ્રવૃત્તિઓ વધવા લાગી એટલે શ્રી વિનોદ કપાસીના નિવાસ સ્થાને મળેલી મિર્ટીગમાં સંસ્થા સ્થાપીને તેનું ચેરીટી રજીસ્ટ્રેશન કરવા માટે પ્રસ્તાવ મૂકવામાં આવ્યો, સંસ્થા માટે બે નામ સૂચવવામાં આવ્યાં (૧) મહાવીર ફાઉન્ડેશન અને (૨) અહિંસા ફાઉન્ડેશન, થોડી ચર્ચા બાદ મહાવીર ફાઉન્ડેશન નામ સ્વીકારવામાં આવ્યું. આ મીટીંગમાં વિનોદ કપાસીએ ભાર પૂર્વક કહ્યું કે આ દેશમા જૈન શિક્ષણ મળે તે હેતુથી આ સંસ્થાએ કામ કરવું જોઈએ વળી આપણે એક દેરાસર બાંધીએ તે માટે પ્રયત્નો કરવા જોઈએ. આ બે મુખ્ય મુદ્દાઓને અનુલક્ષીને સંસ્થા સ્થાપવી તેમ નક્કી થયું. જો કે સંસ્થાનું બંધારણ એવી રીતે કરવું કે બીજી પ્રવૃત્તિઓ પણ જરૂર પડયે થઈ શકે. મનસુખભાઈ શાહે તથા હસમુખભાઈ ગાર્ડીએ બંધારણ ઘડવામાં ઉપયોગી ભાગ ભજવ્યો અને તેમણે સંસ્થાને ચેરીટી સંસ્થા જ નહીં પણ લીમીટેડ કંપનીનું સ્વરૂપ આપ્યું.
આમ ૧૯૮૭માં મહાવીર ફાઉન્ડેશનને રજીસ્ટ્રેશન મળ્યું અને વિધિવત સ્થાપના થઈ. આ બાદ પણ પર્યુષણની ઉજવણી તો પહેલાની જેમ જ બલ્ક બમણા ઉત્સાહથી ચાલુ રહી. વધારે પ્રમાણમાં લોકો આવવા લાગ્યા. વળી અમારા સદભાગ્યે મોટરોઝ કેસર, ઈલીંગ રોડ પર એક દુકાનની ઉપર અમને જગ્યા વાપરવા માટે મળી તેમાં અમે ઘર દેરાસર બનાવરાવ્યું અને ભકિત કરવાં લાગ્યાં. ઘર દેરાસર માટે મહાવીર સ્વામીની મૂર્તિ શ્રી ચીફ ભંડારીજીએ ખાસ મંગાવી આપી અને તેની ત્યાં સદગત ચંચળબેન મહેતા તરફથી સ્થાપના કરવામાં આવી
આ દેરાસરમાં અમે સહુ દર રવિવારે મળતાં હતાં અને ભકિત કરતાં હતાં. દર રવિવારે વિનોદ કપાસી બાળકોને થોડું શિક્ષણ પણ આપતાં હતાં, બે વર્ષ બાદ આ જગ્યા ડીમોલીશ કરવા માટે અને ત્યાં ફલેટસ બાંધવા માટે કોઈ ડેવલપરે નક્કી કર્યું એટલે અમારે તે ખાલી કરવી પડી. આ પછી એક વર્ષ બાદ ઈગ રોડ પર વેણીસન્સના સાડીના સ્ટોર પર અમને કામચલાઉ ધોરણે જગ્યા મળી હતી અને ત્યાં પણ છ મહિના માટે દેરાસર કર્યું હતું.
સંસ્થાના બીજા ભાઈ બહેનોનો સહકાર પણ મળવા લાગ્યો. શ્રી ઈન્દુભાઈ દોશી, ચંદ્રકળાબેન પટવા, દક્ષાબેન દોશી, જયેશભાઈ શાહ, ધીરૂભાઈ ખોના તથા પ્રફુલભાઈ વોરા, ડી.આર. શાહ જોડાયા હતાં. આ બાદ એક વાર શ્રી ભરત મહેતા પણ સેક્રેટરી તરીકે જોડાયા હતાં પણ તેમનું નાની વયમાં જ કરૂણ મૃત્યુ થયું હતું. બે વર્ષ માટે શ્રી

શૈલેષ શાહે પણ સંસ્થાને સેવાઓ આપી હતી. સંસ્થાના બીજા ઉત્સાહી ભાઇ બહેનોમા વધારો થતો જ રહ્યો અને શ્રી સુરેન્દ્ર મહેતા, નવિન શાહ, ચંદ્રકાંત દોશી, જ્યોત્સનાબેન મહેતા તથા અશ્વિન વોરાની સેવાઓનો લાભ પણ મળવા લાગ્યો. ઘેરાસર તથા પ્રોગ્રામોમાં શરદ કોઠારી, બિપિન શયથી શાહ. રજનીમાઇ કપાસી, ભરત મહેતા. રપેશ દોશી, વીરેન ઘેલીયા વગેરે અનેક માર્ય બહેનો સમય આવ્યે ત્યારે સંસ્થાને પોતાની ગણીને સહકાર આપતાં રહે છે. અત્રે બધાના નામ લખવા શક્ય નથી તો માફ કરશો. આ વર્ષે તો ભારતથી આવેલા ભાઈશ્રી જાબાઇ પાસી પણ કાર્યક્રમોમાં ખુબજ મદદ કરી હતી.
સિધ્ધિઓ
મહાવીર ફાઉન્ડેશના અને આપણાં સહુના સૌભાગ્યની વાત છે કે મહાવીર ફાઉન્ડેશનને એક સુંદર મકાન મળેલ છે. આ મકાનમાં અત્યારે આપણે દેરાસર બનાવેલ છે અને અહીં દર અઠવાડીયે લગભગ ૩૫૦ થી ૪૦૦ વ્યક્તિઓ દીનનો લાભ લે છે. આ મામાં શ્રી મહાવીર સ્વામી, શ્રી પાર્શ્વનાથ ભગવાન, શ્રી આદિનાથ ભગવાન, શ્રી માણીભદ્રવીર, પદ્માવતી માતા તથા ગૌતમ સ્વામીની મૂર્તિઓની સ્થાપના કરેલી છે. દેરાસરની બાજુના રૂમમાં શ્રીમ, રાજચંદ્રની સુંદર છબી મૂકી છે અને અહીં દર મંગળવારે તથા બુધવારે સત્સંગો યોજાય છે. દેરાસરની ઉપર અત્યારે સાધ્વીશ્રી શીલાપીજી રહે છે. તેઓશ્રી વીરાયતનથી આવે છે અને ૫. પૂ. આચાર્યા ચંદનાજીના શિષ્યા છે. તેઓ અહીં લંડન યુનીવર્સીટીમાં પી. એચડી. કરે છે.
કાર્યક્રમોની રૂપરેખા
મહાવીર ફાઉન્ડેશને અનેક પ્રકારના સુંદર કાર્યક્રમોનું આયોજન કરેલું છે. આપણા કેન્ટન સેન્ટરમાં મૂર્તિની સ્થાપના કર્યા પહેલાં મૂર્તિઓના અઢાર અભિષેકનો સુંદર કાર્યક્રમ રાખવામાં આવયો હતો. આ સિવાય મા એ ત્રણ વર્ષમાં પદમાવતી પૂજન, ગૌતમ સ્વામી પૂજન, મક્તામર પૂજન વગેરે કાર્યક્રમો યોજાયા હતાં જેમાં બહુ મોટી સંખ્યામાં ધર્મપ્રેમીઓએ ભાગ લીધો હતો.
કેન્ટન રોડ પરની જગ્યા આપણને સ્વભાવિક રીતે જ નાની પડે છે અને સહુની ભાવના છે કે જેમ બને તેમ જલ્દી મોટી જગ્યા લઇને શિખરબંધી દેરાસરનું નિર્માણ થવું જોઇએ.
અન્ય પ્રવૃત્તિઓ
મહાવીર ફાઉન્ડેશન કાઉટ હોલમાં દર વર્ષે પર્યુષણ તો જવું જ છે પરંતુ આ ઉપરાંત મહાવીર જયંતીનો કાર્યક્રમ પા થાય છે. ભૂતકાળમાં સહુથી પહેલી યુથ શિબિર મહાવીર ફાઉન્ડેશને બોલાવી હતી અને કેનેડાથી ઘુસ કોંસ્ટેઇનું આમંત્રણ આપ્યું હતું. ઇન્સ્ટીટયુટ ઑફ જૈનોલોજીના ક્લાસીસ પણ આપણા સેન્ટરમાં જ યોજાય છે. વીરાયતન અને યંગ જૈન્સ દ્વારા ચાલતા ક્લાસીસ પ્રથમ આપણા સેન્ટરમાં જ શરૂ કરવામાં આવ્યાં હતાં. પર્યુષણ બાદ તપસ્વીઓના પારણા કરાવવાની પ્રથા મહાવીર ફાઉન્ડેશને સહુ પ્રથમ શરૂ કરી હતી તે હવે જો કે બંધ કરેલ છે. છેલ્લા બે વર્ષ દરમ્યાન મહાવીર ફાઉન્ડેશને નવરાત્રીના તહેવારો દરમ્યાન પદ્માવતી માતા તથા અંબિકામાતાના રાસ-ગાનું પણ સુંદર આયોજન કરેલ છે.
નાણાકીય સધ્ધરતા:
મહાવીર ફાઉન્ડેશનની નાણાકીય પરિસ્થિતિ અત્યારે સંગીન છે પરંતુ દેરાસર બનાવવા માટે ઘણી મોટી રકમની જરૂર પડવાની છે અને અમે સાશા રાખીએ છીએ કે મહાવીર ફાઉન્ડેશન દ્વારા જયારે જમીન લેવાય ત્યારે સહુ ભાવિક જનો ધર્મના આ મહાન કાર્યમાં અને આપણી ભાવિ પેઢી માટે એક મોટુ ગંભાક્ષ મૂકી જવામાં સાથ અને સહકાર આપશે અને તન, મન અને ધનથી સહાય કરશે.

This story is about a man called Naysar, who was destined to become Lord Mahavir after several lives.
10th Anniversary Issue
One day Naysar went to the forest to cut some firewood. He worked all morning, and was ready to sit down and eat his lunch. Naysar was a generous man and he thought, that it would be very nice if he could share his lunch with somebody.
As if in answer to his wish, a few Jain Munis, came into view. They had lost their way in the forest, and got separated from their group.
Naysar greeted them kindly, and offered them food, promising to show them the way out of the forest once they had eaten.
Once the Jain Munis had eaten Naysar happily showed them the way out of the forest, walking with them. On the way, the Munis talked to him about the Right Faith, Right Knowledge and Right Conduct. Naysar took it all in. His life changed. He began to live a much more. peaceful, and non-violent life.
He sowed the seeds of his future greatness, during this brief encounter with the Jain Munis, and after several lives, he was born as Prince Vardhman, who was later known as Lord Mahavir - the 24th Tirthankar.

રવ. શ્રીમતી ચંચળબેન શાંતિલાલ મહેતા: ' (મહાવીર ફાઉન્ડેશનના એક અનન્ય શુભેચ્છક ચંચળબેનનું તાજેતરમાં અવસાન થયું છે. તેમની જીવન ઝરમર સદગત ચંચળબેનનો જન્મ સૌરાષ્ટ્રના જોડીયા ગામે ૧૯૧૭ની સાલમાં થયો હતો. પિતા અમૃતલાલ માવજી મહેતા, માતા મણીબેન નથુભાઈ ગાંધી.. તેમના લગ્ન સદગત શ્રી શાંતિલાલ મનસુખલાલ મહેતા (પાળીયા મીયાણા) સાથે ૧૯૩૨માં થયા હતા. શ્રી શાંતિલાલભાઈ કંપાલા, યુગાન્ડામાં જમાલ વાલજીને ત્યાં નોકરીમાં જોડાયા હતા અને સ્વતંત્ર કાપડની દુકાન ચલાવતાં હતાં. શ્રી શાંતિલાલભાઈ ધર્મપ્રેમી, વિનયી અને ન્યાય નીતિવાળા, આનંદી સ્વભાવના સદગૃહસ્થ હતાં, સદગત ચંચળબેન પણ સંસ્કારી, ઘર્મરૂચિવાળા અને સરળ સ્વભાવના ગૃહિણી હતાં, ત્યારના સંજોગો પ્રમાણે તેઓ સાત્વિક, કરકસર યુકત જીવન જીવતાં હતા. પતિ પત્ની બંને અનેકવિધ ધાર્મિક પ્રવૃત્તિઓમાં ભાગ લેતાં હતા. પૂ શ્રી શાંતિભાઈ ઘરે પ્રતિક્રમણ પણ ભણાવતાં હતા. સદગત ચંચળબેન ખુબજ ધર્મનિષ્ઠ હતા અને જૈનધર્મના આચાર પ્રમાણે અનેક તપશ્ચર્યા પણ કરતાં હતા. તેમણે ખીર સમુદ્ર પણ કરેલ, તેમને શિક્ષણની પ્રવૃત્તિમાં પણ ખુબજ રસ હતો અને ધાર્મિક પુસ્તકો છપાવવામાં રસ લેતાં હતાં સાંસારિક ક્ષેત્રે તેમણે પોતાના પુત્રોના ઉછેરમાં તથા વ્યવહારમાં પોતાના કર્તવ્યનું સુંદર રીતે પાલન કર્યું. તેમણે પોતાના ચારેય પુત્રોને મમતાથી ઉછેરી, તેમનામાં ઉચ્ચ સંસ્કારોનું સિંચન કર્યું. ૧૯૫૧માં શાંતિલાલભાઈએ ભાગીદારીમાં કાપડનો વેપાર શરૂ કર્યો. ૧૯૫૫માં મોટા પુત્રો હરસુખભાઈ અને પ્રવીણભાઈને અભ્યાસ અર્થે ઈન્ગલેન્ડ મોકલ્યાં. એ વખતની આર્થિક સ્થિતિ જોતા આ મોટું સાહસ હતું.. માતા પિતાના આશીર્વાદથી તેમના ચારેય પુત્રો લંડન યુનીવર્સીટીની ડીગ્રી પ્રાપ્ત કરી શક્યા. ૧૯૫ત્ના મે માસમાં શ્રી શાંતિલાલભાઈ ટૂંકી બિમારીમાં હાર્ટએટેકથી અવસાન પામ્યાં. એ સમયે હરસુખભાઈ અને પ્રવીણભાઈને ડીગ્રી કોર્સના બીજા વર્ષમાં અભ્યાસ કરતાં હતાં, પૂ. ચંચળબેન માટે આ કારમો આઘાત હતો. પરંતુ સમતા રાખી, હિંમત રાખી તેમણે કર્તવ્યની મશાલને જલતી રાખી. તેમણે પોતાના જીવનમાં આધ્યાત્મિક પ્રકારની ઝાંખી કરી અને સહદયતા, સરળતા અને સંયમને અપનાવીને પ્રભુમય જીવન શરૂ કર્યું. શાંતિભાઈના અવસાન બાદ જયસુખભાઈએ ભણતા ભણતા બઘો ભાર ઉપાડી લીધો. એ બાદ એક વર્ષ પછી સદગત હરસુખભાઈએ પૂરો ભાર ઉપાડી લીધો.. પૂ. ચંચળબેને પોતાના ચારેય પુત્રોને પરણાવ્યા અને એક વિશાળ વટવૃક્ષને પોતાના ગ્રેહથી સિંચન કરતા રહ્યા. પૂ. પુષ્પાબેન તથા શ્રીમતી કોકિલાબેન, શ્રીમતી ઈલાબેન તથા શ્રીમતી સુધાબેન એમ ચારેય પુત્રવધુઓ માટે તેઓ સાસુ નહીં પરંતુ માતુશ્રી બનીને રહ્યા.દરેક વહુને પોતાની દીકરી તરીકે અપનાવી અને તેના પ્રતિભાવમાં દરેકે ચંચળબેનને પોતાના સાચા બાથીયે વિશેષ બા બનાવ્યા. તેમના પુત્રો સદગત હરસુખભાઈ, તથા સર્વશ્રી પ્રવીણભાઈ જયસુખભાઈ અને કુમુદભાઈ તથા પુત્રી સમાન ચારેય પુત્રવધુઓ પ્રત્યે તેમણે અનન્ય એહ દાખવીને માતૃપ્રેમ આપ્યો. એમના આર્શીવાદથી એમના કુટુંબે સામાજિક, ધાર્મિક ક્ષેત્રે ખુબજ પ્રગતિ કરી છે. પૂ. ચંચળબેને છેલ્લા સાત વર્ષથી સંસારના રાગદ્વેષનો ત્યાગ કરી, પૂ. કૃપાળુ દેવ કથિત માર્ગ પર, પૂ. બાપુજીના આશીર્વાદથી આધ્યાત્મિક માર્ગે ખુબજ ઉન્નતિ કરી. તેમણે બ્રિટનમાં અનેક સંસ્થાઓને પોતાના શુભ આર્શીવાદથી સહકાર અને પ્રેરણા આપ્યાં. હવે ૮૧ વર્ષની વયે અચાનક તા ૧૭-૧૦-૯૭ના રોજ ટૂંકી બિમારી ભોગવી આપણી વચ્ચેથી તેમણે વિદાય લીધી છે. પ્રભુનો જાપ કરતાં, ગુરુને હાથ જોડી, તેમણે નશ્વરદેહનો ત્યાગ કર્યો છે. દેહ છોડયો છે. પ. પૂપરમાત્મા આ ઉચ્ચકક્ષાના જીવને શાશ્વત શાંતિ અર્પે તેવી પ્રાર્થના. # શાંતિ: શાંતિ: શાંતિ:

( પર્યુષણમાં મહાવીર જન્મ-વાંચનના શુભ દિને કલ્પસૂત્રમાંથી મહાવીર સ્વામીના જન્મ વિષેની આ વિગત વાંચવી

અષાઢ મહિનાની, શુક્લ પક્ષની કઠીએ, ૨૦ સાગરોપમ વર્ષોનું આયુષ્ય સમાપન કરીને શ્રમણ ભગવાન મહાવીર મહાવિજય પુષ્પોત્તર વિમાન દ્વારા આ જંબુદ્રીપમાં ભારત વર્ષે પર ઉતર્યા અને દેવાના નામની સ્ત્રીની કુક્ષિમાં પધાર્યા.
જે રાત્રે શ્રમણ ભગવાન મહાવીર દેવાનંદાની કુક્ષિમાં પધાર્યા ત્યારે દેવાનંદાએ અર્ધ જાગૃત અવસ્થામાં ચૌદ સ્વપ્નો જોયાં સિંહ, હાથી. વૃષભ, લક્ષ્મીજી, પુષ્પમાળ, ચંદ્ર, સૂર્ય, ધ્વજ,કળા, કમળ સરોવર, સાગર,વિમાન રોગમય, અને તેણે નિર્દોપ અગ્રિ
આ રમણીય.મંગલકારી ચનોને નીરખીને દેવાનંદા ખૂબજ પ્રફુલ્લિત થઈ ગઈ. દેવોના દેવ રાક કહ છે કે:અરીહંતનો કે વતીનો કે વાસુદેવનો જન્મ અયોગ્ય કુળમાં ન થાય. એમનો જન્મ તો સુયોગ્ય, ઉચ્ચ રાજવંશી કુળમાં જ થવો જોઈએ. આમ સમજીને સૌધર્મેન્દ્ર શકે પોતાના એક દેવ હરિણૈગમેષીને ભગવાન મહાવીરના ગર્ભની અદલા બદલીની આજ્ઞા કરી. આ અનુજ્ઞા અનુસાર હરિણૈગમેષીએ દેવાનંદાના ગર્ભમાંથી ખૂબજ કાળજીપૂર્વક શ્રમણ ભગવાન મહાવીરના દેહને લઇ લીધો અને ત્રિશલા રાશીના ગર્ભમાં મૂક્યો, અને ત્રિશલા રાણીના ગર્ભમાં રહેલ કન્યાના દેહને દેવાનંદાના ગર્ભમાં મૂક્યો
અર્ધનિંદ્રામાં ત્રિશલાએ નીચે પ્રમાણે ચૌદ મંગળમય મહાસ્વપ્નો જોયા અને જાગી ઉઠયાં,આ સ્વપ્નો હતાં :માતાએ જોયા'તા રામણામાં, ચૌદ ચૌદ સપના મંગલકારી લિંકેસરી ગર્જના કરવો ચૈન હાથી સ્વૈર વિહારી વૃદ્ધ હતાં ને હતો લક્ષ્મી, પાંચમે દેખી પુષ્પની માળા ચાંદો જોયો, સુરજ જોયા, જોયા ધ્વજને કળશ રુપાળા કમળ સરોવર સુંદર સોહે, સાગરવર ગંભીર ઉછળતો વિમાન ઉંચે ઉડે હવામાં ને રત્નોનો રાશિ ચમતો છેલ્લે સપને નિર્હુમ અગ્નિ, તપ સંયમના પ્રતીક સમાન હરખે માતા ત્રિરાલા દેવી, ઘન્ય જીવતર પુત્ર મહાન

આ ચૌદ સ્વપ્નો જોઇને ત્રિશલા અત્યંત પ્રસન્ન થયાં, આનંદ વિભોર થયાં. પૂર્ણ જાગૃત થઈ પોતાના શયનખંડમાંથી બહાર આવીને પોતાના પતિ, સિદ્ધાર્થ રાજાને જગાડયાં અને આ સ્વપ્નોની વાત કરી તથા સ્વપ્નોનો શું અર્થ હશે તે જાણવાની જીજ્ઞાસા પ્રદર્શન કરી. સિદધાર્થ રાજા બોલ્યા “ઓરાલા ાં મે દેવાણપ્તિએ સુમિણા દિઠ્ઠા”
હું દેવાનુપ્રય ! મેં ખરેજ ખૂબજ ઉમા સ્વરો નિહાળ્યા છે. કલ્યાાકારી સ્વો નિહાળ્યાં છે. ખરેખર તે ચો મંગળમય, ભાગ્યવંતા, આશિષકારી છે. એનાથી આરોગ્ય, લાભ, ચિરંજીવીપણું અને કલ્યાણ પ્રાપ્ત થશે. આપણી રિદ્ધિ સિદ્ધિ, રાજ્ય, મિત્રો, ઘન,સુખ વગેરેમાં વૃદ્ધિ થરો. નવ માસ સાડા સાત દિવસ અને રાત્રી વીતતા તારી કૂખે પુત્રનો જન્મ થરો જે કુળની વૃદ્ધિ કરનાર હરો,આપણા કુળનો દીપક હશે, આપણા ગોત્રનો મુકુટ હરો આપણને યા,કીર્તિ અને આનંદ આપશે. તે સર્વાંગસંપૂર્ણ અવયવો યુક્ત,સારા લક્ષણોવાળો, ચંદ્ર જેવી રીતળ ક્રાંતિ વાળો આનંદમય અને સુંદર હરશે. યુવાન વયે તે સૂર અને વીર થશે. સર્વ પ્રકારનું જ્ઞાન સંપાદન કરરી અને મહાન લશ્કરવાળો, સર્વ પ્રકારનાં વાહનો અને સાધનોવાળો બની વિશાળ રાજ્યસત્તા ધારણ કરશે. ત્રિરાલારાણી આ સાંભળીને ખૂબજ પ્રસન્ન વદને બોલ્યાં “જે તમે કહોછો તે સત્ય છે, મારા સ્વામી ! એજ સત્ય છે મને એમાં શંકા નથી." આમ કહીને ત્રિશલારાણીએ ૨ાત્રીનો શેષ ભાગ જાગૃત અવસ્થામાં જ ગાળ્યો.
સિદ્ધાર્થ રાજાને સ્વપ્નોના ફળાદેશ માટે જ્યોતિષીઓ અને સ્વપ્નપાઠકોને નિમંયા. સર્વે જ્યોતિષીઓ અને સ્વપ્નપાઠકોએ સવિસ્તર સઘળી વાત જાણીને અસ પરસ મસલત કરીને અને ચર્ચા વિચારણા કરીને અંતિમ નિષ્કર્ષ પર આવ્યાં.
“એવું ખલુ દેવાણુખિયા ! અહં સુમિણ સન્થે બાયાલીસઁ સુમિણા”
હે દેવાનુપ્રિય (મહારાજા સિદ્ધાર્થ) અમારાં સ્વપ્ન ગ્રંથોમાં ફૂલ ૭૨ સ્વપ્ન નોંધેલા છે. એમાંથી ૩૦ મહાસ્વપ્રો છે. ૪૨ અન્ય સ્વપ્રો છે જ્યારે અર્હત કે ચક્રવર્તી પોતાની માતાના ગર્ભમાં હોયછે ત્યાર માતા જાગીને આવા મહાન ૩૦ સ્વપ્નોમાંથી ૧૪ નો જૂએ છે.જ્યારે વાસુદેવનો

જન્મ થવાનો હોય છે ત્યારે માતા આ ૧૪ સ્વપ્રોમાંથી કોઇપણ સાત સ્વપ્ન જૂએ છે. જ્યારે બળદેવનો જન્મ થવાનો હોય છે ત્યારે માતા આ ૧૪ સ્વપ્રોમાંથી કોઈપણ ચાર સ્વપૂ જૂએ છે જ્યારે માંડલિકનો જન્મ થવાનો હોય છે ત્યારે માતા આ ૧૪ સ્વપ્રોમાંથી કોઈપણ એક જ સ્વપ્ર જૂએ છે. ત્રિશલા મહારાણીએ તો ચૌદ સ્વપ્રો જોયાં છે. તે ખૂબજ મંગળમય કલ્યાણકારી, ઉમદા, ભાગ્યવંત આરોગ્ય, બુદ્ધિ અને દીર્ધાયુષ્ય બક્ષનાર છે. એનાથી રિદ્ધિ સિદ્ધિ, સુખ સગવડો, મિત્રો અને રાજ્યની વૃદ્ધિ થશે અને નવ માસ સાડાસાત દિવસ અને રાત બાદ તેમની કુક્ષિએ પુત્ર રત્નનો જન્મ થશે. આ પુત્ર કુળ દીપક હશે. યશ, કીર્તિ અને ઘન-ઘાન્યની વૃદ્ધિ કરાવનાર હશે. આનંદ-મંગળની પ્રાપ્તિ કરાવનાર હશે. તે સર્વાગ સંપૂર્ણ અવયવો યુક્ત, સારા લક્ષણો વાળો, ચંદ્ર જેવી શીતળ કાંતિ વાળો, આનંદમય અને સુંદર હશે. યુવાન વયે તે શૂર અને વીર થશે. સર્વ પ્રકારનું જ્ઞાન સંપાદન કરો, અને મહાન લશ્કરવાળો, સર્વ પ્રકારનાં વાહનો અને સાધનો વાળો બની વિશાળ રાજ્યસત્તા ધારણ કરશે. અથવા તો એ આધ્યાત્મિક પ્રગતિના પંથે વિચરી, ત્રિ- જગતનો નાયક થશે, ધર્મપ્રવર્તક કરો, તીર્થંકર થશે, જિન થશે. આ પ્રકારનાં વચનો સાંભળીને સિદ્ધાર્થ રાજા અને ત્રિશલારાણી ખૂબજ પ્રસન્ન થયાં. જે રાત્રે શ્રમણ ભગવાન મહાવીર જ્ઞાત્ર- કુળમાં પ્રવેશ્યા ત્યારે જ્ઞાત્ર કુળમાં ઘન ઘાન્ય, સોના ચાંદી અને રાજ્ય તથા સીમાડાઓ, સાધન સગવડો, વાહનો, યશ અને કીર્તિની વૃદ્ધિ થઈ. આ પ્રકારે રિદ્ધિ સિદ્ધિની વૃદ્ધિ થતાં જ શ્રમણ ભગવાન મહાવીરનાં માતાપિતાએ નિર્ણય કર્યો કે આ ધ ન ધાન્ય, સુખ-સગવડો, મહેલો, રત્નો અને સોના-ચાંદીની વૃધ્ધિ જેના કારણે થઈ છે તે લક્ષમાં લઈને જન્મનાર બાળકનું નામ વર્ધમાન રાખવું શ્રમણ ભગવાન મહાવીર જ્યારે ત્રિશલા માતાના ગર્ભમાં હતા ત્યારે તેમણે માતૃભક્તિ અને માતૃપ્રેમથી પ્રેરાઈને એમ વિચાર્યું કે જો હું ગર્ભમાં વધુ હલન - ચલન કરીશ તો માતાને દુઃખ થશે અને પીડા થશે એટલે તેમણે સૂક્ષ્મ અને પરમ અહિંસાની ભાવનાથી હલન ચલન સંપૂર્ણ બંધ કરી દીધુ. પરંતુ આમ હલન ચલન બંધ થતાં જ ત્રિશલા માતાને અત્યંત ચિંતા થઈ. ગર્ભમાંના બાળકનું શું થયું
હશે ? શા માટે કોઈ પ્રકારનું હલન ચલન થતું નથી ? શું કોઈએ ગર્ભહરણ કર્યું હશે ? આમ વિચાર આવતાં જ ચારે તરફ સહુ ચિંતાનો સાગરમાં ડૂબી ગયા. આનંદ, ઉલ્લાસ, મંગળગીતો અને મંગળ ધ્વનિ ઓ શાંત થઈ ગયો. શ્રમણ ભગવાન મહાવીરને માતાની આ અવસ્થાની જાણ થતાં જ તેમણે પુન: ગર્ભમાં માતાને દુ:ખ ન થાય એમ શાંતિથી થોડું હલન-ચલન કર્યું. આમ હલન ચલન થતાં જ ત્રિશલા રાણીને હૈયે શાંતિ થઈ. તેમને ખાત્રી થઈ કે ગર્ભમાં બાળક સલામત છે અને હવે ચિંતાને માટે કોઈ કારણ નથી. એ જ સમયે શ્રમણ ભગવાન મહાવીરે ગર્ભમાં ચિંતવન કર્યું કે જયાં સુધી મારા માતા પિતા જીવંત હશે ત્યાં સુધી હું ગૃહ ત્યાગ નહીં કરું. દીક્ષા નહીં લઉં. આ દિવસો પછી ક્ષત્રિયાણી ત્રિશલાએ આનંદમાં દિવસો વીતાવ્યા. દાન અને દયાના કાર્યો કર્યા. સુયોગ્ય અને સુખકર આહાર વિહાર કર્યા. તેણે કાલેણં,તેણે સમએણે ૯ માસ, સાડા સાત દિન અને રાત્રી બાદ ચૈત્ર સુદ ૧૩ ના શુભ દિવસે. ઉત્તરા ફાળુની નક્ષત્રમાં, જ્યારે સર્વત્ર આનંદ મંગળ પ્રવર્તતા હતાં. સહુના દિલમાં હર્ષોલ્લાસ હતાં ત્યારે ત્રિશાલા રાણીની કૂખે શ્રમણ ભગવાન મહાવીરનો સંપૂર્ણ આરોગ્યમય અવસ્થામાં જન્મ થયો
સ્વ. શ્રી લાલચંદભાઈ મહેતા. સ્વ. શ્રી લાલચંદભાઈ મહેતા. એક અગ્રણી સમાજ | સેવક અને મહાવીર ફાઉન્ડેશનના શુભેચ્છક હતાં તેમણે અનેક પ્રસંગોમાં મહાવીર ફાઉન્ડેશનના કાર્યોમાં અનન્ય મદદ કરી હતી. આ પ્રસંગે અમે તેમને યાદ કરીને તેમના આત્માની શાંતિ અર્થે પ્રાર્થના કરીએ છીએ.

(A very famous and auspicious mantra. It was composed by Acharya Bhadrabahu some two thousand years ago. It is believed that this mantra is capable of removing all obstacles. Here the poet praises the twenty third Tirthankara - Lord Parsvanath.)
Uvassagaharm Pasam Pasam vandami kammaghana mukkam Visahar visninnasam mangal kallan aavasam
= I worship Parsvanath and his Yaksha, who remove all obstacles and destroy misery. Parsvanath has destroyed all karmas. Even the deadliest venom has been destroyed and he is the abode of all that is auspicious.
Visahara fullinga mantam kanthe dharei jo saya manuo,
Tassa gaha rog mari duttah jara janti uvasamam
=If peope can hold this mantra, which is a remover of poison, on their neck/throat, the diseases, death, old age etc would not come to their houses.

=Although, when I surrender at your divine feet, I do not need any mantra. Humans and animals, those who bow down, do not suffer from any miseries and they do not fall into the lowest/ unhappiest state.

=Your faith is like a tree (or a Chinatamani jewel) which grants all wishes All beings, without any obstacles, do attain immortal place

VEERAYATAN
COMPASSION IN ACTION
Veerayatan is a social welfare institution in the north eastern state of Bihar in India. The institution, formed in 1972, has become well renowned for its community service to the local population ameliorating poverty, overcoming superstition, providing education and employment, and most of all vital medical facilities.
It is not the physical ravages of war, nor the harsh torture of oppression that destroys the lives of millions of people in Bihar, the poorest state in India. Their fate is worse, for theirs is a mental torture that touches men, women and children indiscriminately. It is a more humiliating and constant form of torture - known simply as BLINDNESS. Blindness leads to loss of confidence, status and usefulness. It completes destruction with dependency for every need and fear of every movement. It steals the faces of new grandchildren and old friends. Every day is the same-a world of total darkness. For the tribal population of Bihar, blindness is a living form of death.
Love and devotion, which are the foundation of Veerayatan are manifested through the hundred bed charitable eye hospital, located in the grounds of the institution. To date, Veerayatan Eye Hospital has performed over 70,000 cataract extractions. This simple, relatively inexpensive eye surgery is the most successful means of restoring eyesight and therefore the quality of life.
Each year the demand for eye operations in the poverty stricken state of Bihar is growing. The root of the problem lies with malnutrition, lack of any education system, lack of sanitation, and primary health care riddled with the prevalent superstitions. Unfortunately blindness is not a life-threatening condition, and therefore not a State priority. Thus the scope of humanitarian work is unlimited as Veerayatan is the only medical centre for hundreds of miles.
Veerayatan has given unflinching service in the field of community health, and education without discriminating between cast or creed. By doing so it has created a social transformation in the locality.
The Veerayatan site is rich in its historical heritage, where undercurrents of Jainism, Buddhism and Vedic religion meet. This glorious place is blessed with the fourteen Chaturmas of Lord Mahaveer, the nirvan of his eleven Ganadhars, and the composition of some of the most significant Jain scriptures.
Today, through the untiring efforts of Acharya Chandanaji, Veerayatan stands as a divine miracle that embodies an eloquent alliance of intellect, courage, devotion and determination.

ADOPT THE DERASAR' SCHEME Our derasar was opened two years ago and nearly 350 to 400 people do darshana here each week Our annual running expenditure is approximately £10,000. Mahavir Foundation has devised a scheme for the maintenance of the property.
We are looking for families who can “Adopt” the Derasar for one day (any date you choose) in a year. You can choose a date, it could be the date which you remember in your life (eg. it could be the date which carries memories of your nearest and dearest ones) You give this date to us and on this fixed date every year... the Derasar is like your property. You come with your family and friends, worship here, do Aarti and Mangal divo, Chaitya Vandan, pooja, bhakti and generally look after it like your own place. We will display your name on the board together with the date you give us. This way we hope to have 365 days alloocated to various persons. We ask £501. for this KAYAMI TITHI . Your name is to be permanently displayed even if we move in a larger premises. Those not wishing to take up the KAYAMI TITHI, can adopt the Derasar for one day in a particular year for just £51 (subject to availibility) Please come forward and ADOPT THE DERASAR for atleast one day in a year.
લંડનમાં દીક્ષાર્થી બહેનોનું ભવ્ય સન્માન મહાવીર ફાઉન્ડેશન, લંડનના ખાસ આમંત્રણને માન આપી, લીંબડી અજરામર સંપ્રદાયના પૂજય ઉજ્જવળકુમારીબાઈ શ્રી મહાસતીજી પાસે દીક્ષાભ્યાસ કરતાં નીચેના ત્રણ દીક્ષાર્થી બહેનો ભારતથી ૧૯૭ના વર્ષના પર્યુષણ પ્રસંગે લંડન આવ્યાં હતાં. જસવંતીબેન નરશી છાડવા (૨૪ વર્ષ), યામીનીબેન પ્રેમજી ગાલા, (૨૫ વર્ષ) , નીતાબેન પ્રેમજી ગાલા (૩૨ વર્ષ) આ ત્રણેય બહેનોનું લંડનમાં વરઘોડો કાઢીને ખાસ સન્માન કરવામાં આવેલ હતું અને ૩૧મી ઓગસ્ટ ૧૯૭ રવિવારે કડવા પાટીદાર હોલ કેરેન ખાતે બધી સંસ્થાઓના પ્રેસીડેન્ટસ તરફથી સ્ટેજ પર અભિવાદન કરીને ત્રણેય બહેનોને સંઘનું માનપત્ર આપીને બહુમાન કરવામાં આવ્યું હતું. મહાવીર ફાઉન્ડેશનના પ્રમુખ શ્રી વિનોદભાઈ કપાસીએ જણાવ્યું હતું કે દીક્ષાર્થી બહેનોનું સન્માન એટલે જૈન પરંપરાનું સન્માન આ બહેનોનું સન્માન કરીને અમે અહીંના જૈનોને દીક્ષાના કઠિન માર્ગ વિષે સમજાવ્યું છે અને સંયમના માર્ગે યથાશક્તિ પ્રયાણ કરવાની પ્રેરણા આપી છે. મહાવીર ફાઉન્ડેશને એ બતાવી આપ્યું છે કે અહીં દેરાવાસી કે સ્થાનકવાસીના ભેદ નથી પરંતુ ભગવાન મહાવીરના જૈન શાસનમાં સહુ તેમના અનુયાયીઓ છે અને એક ધ્વજ નીચે સંગઠિત છે. સહુ પોતાની રીતે ધર્મધ્યાન કરીને ઐક્ય અને ભાઈચારાનું સુંદર દ્રષ્ટાંત પૂરું પાડે છે. બહેનોએ સન્માનના જવાબમાં ભાવવાહી ભાષામાં તેમને નાની ઉંમરમાં વૈરાગ્યની ભાવના કઈ રીતે ઉત્પન્ન થઈ તે વિષે તથા કૌટુંબિક સંબંધોની અસારતા વિષે સમજાવ્યું હતું અને ભગવાન મહાવીરના ઉપદેશ વિષે મનનીય વાત કરી હતી. દીક્ષાર્થી બહેનોના અહીંના નિવાસ દરમ્યાન તેઓ અનેક ભાઈ બહેનોના આમંત્રણનો સ્વીકાર કરીને તેમના ઘરે ગયાં હતાં અને અન્ય સ્થળોએ પ્રવચનો પણ આપ્યાં હતા. મહાવીર ફાઉન્ડેશન તરફથી તેમને જયારે વિદાયમાન આપવામાં આવ્યું ત્યારે શ્રી લબડી અજરામર સંપ્રદાય દ્વારા સંચાલિત સુરેન્દ્રનગરના કેળવણીના કાર્ય માટે અને સાધુ સાધ્વીઓની વૈયાવચ્ચ માટે રૂપિયા ૧૫૦, ૦૦૦ (દોઢ લાખ)નો ચેક તેમને અર્પણ કરવામાં આવ્યો હતો.

NAVKAR MANTRA

Name- Is it Navkar Mantra, Namokar Mantra or Namaskar Mantra ?
The first smaran (recitation) Navkar Mantra is really a Namokar Mantra because one bows down or pays his respect which is called Nam(o) in Sanskrit language. The Nam is an verb, the act of bowing down. In Namaskar Mantra (NM from now on) one bows down in front of the Arhatas (enlightened ones). The word Namo is derived from this verb and is used to say 'Namo..... (...any name....)' meaning I bow down to (name). The foremost thing in this recitation is that the person recites the mantra with utmost respect and humility and feels that he/she is seeking blessings and/or guidance from the person or a god to whom he is worshipping

The mantra therefore is aptly called a Namokar Mantra. In Prakrit language N is usually pronounced as an (sarvatra n karasya sthane an karo bhavtiti..) Also as per the mantra- science in Jain tradition, anmo has anima siddhi (The power of becoming smaller)'
Anima Siddhi would really mean being more humble and polite, not physically a small person. The word anmo consists of two separate letters an and mo or it can be divided as anm + o
An has anima siddhi because the letter an is in the word anima and like the letter m in anima the same letter is found in anmo.

According to Yogasashtra of Hemchandra, one of the vayu (wind/air) in our body is Udan vayu. One can achieve Anima Siddhi by conquering Udan vayu. Udan vayu lives in heart, throat, palate, in the middle of the eye brows and head. The letter a is pronounced by the throat and u is pronounced by lips. Therefore o (a+u) comes from throat and its repeated recitation is helpful in conquering Udan vayu, and this can be conquered by repeating a and usystematically"
This attempt of justifying the sound 'anamo' instead of Namo does not carry much significance except that the devotee of the mantra would think about the magical power and the siddhi associated with different letters.
As regards the historical background, it is noteworthy that the NM is not found in earlier scriptures, Acharanga Sootra, Suyagdanga, and the later ones like Anuyoga and Nandisootra does not contain this NM in the beginning. The practice of writing NM in the beginning of any text must have been started after around first century AD. The manuscripts of Kalpasootra have NM in the beginning but surely this is written because a tradition of writing NM was developed late. It is also established that the Kalpasootra was penned down in 453 AD". The text of Tattvartha Sootra does not have NM in the beginning and this text was composed in the first century AD.
Old manuscripts of the Digambara scriptures like Samaya Sar or Niyam Sar do not have Navkar Mantra in the beginning of the text. The question is therefore was NM composed quite late? or is it true that the practice of writing NM in the beginning started quite late. The answers to these questions may not be found anywhere. Jains believe that NM is eternal and beginning less
It may be possible that NM in the present form was composed much later then what people believe. Jain writers were only writing a sentence or two in obeisance to Mahavira."
But again one can not deduce that because NM was not written in the beginning of any texts, it did not exist. Trishashti Shalaka Purusha Charitra which consists of the lives of 63 great personalities have mentioned an incident in the life of Parsvanath. In the incident Parsvanath recites NM on seeing a snake who was about to die after accidentally being burnt in a fire. If this is the case, NM was in existence during the 9th Century BCE. According to Jainendra Siddhanta Kosha vol 3, page 247- NM was composed by a Digambara Acharya Pushpadanta.
According to the Shwetambara text Mahanishith the NM was composed in the form of a sutra (present form) by the disciples of Mahavira but its main essence was mentioned by Mahavir himself. The part of this mantra is also seen in the beginning of Bhagavati Sootra but it is not in the same form as is generally seen now.
All these conflicting opinions do not prove anything but one might be tempted to draw a conclusion that NM in present form (of nine padas) did not exist during the time of Mahavir. People used to bow down or pay their respects to Arihanta and Siddha without actually saying the phrases which are found in NM. The present form is composed by some unknown writer or writers (They may be ganadharas) and it continued ever since.

The meaning -
Namo Arihantanam I bow to (and revere) Arihantas
The first thing one does is the bowing down to Arihanta. The word Arihanta comes from the Sanskrit *Arhat' which means enlightened one. Jains and Buddhists have used this word and both have described their great teachers as arhatas. Jains, however say that arhatas are those who have destroyed all their deadly (Ghati) karmas and who have attained the highest form of knowledge (keval- gyana). Arhats are also known as kevalin (One with keval gyan) or Jina ( one who has conquered his inner enemies).
According to Ashta Pabhrit Those who have removed all sins and merits, are above birth, old age, diseases and death and are free from all karma-stains and have achieved the knowledge of soul are Arhatas
Arhats are those super being who have attained keval gyan and are free from evil karmas.
NM teaches one to bow down and whilst bowing down a Jain does not ask any favour from his God but remembers his virtues, hence it is important to find out why Arihanta, Siddha, Acharya, Upadhyaya and Sadhus - these five-are chosen for veneration. The answer probably lies in the first two padas or lines. Namo Arihantanam Namo Siddhanam Here one bows down to Arihanta and Siddha. These are not the names of any living beings nor are they names of any particular Gods. A Jain here pays his reverence to two titles or virtues. Arihanta or Arhata means enlightened soul, and has certain 12 attributes." Siddhas are liberated souls and have eight special attributes
Attributes of Arihanta
When Arihanta ( Tirthankara ) sits in the samvasaran and starts giving a sermon, eight special - divine things happen1. The Asoka tree is seen i.e. Tirthankara is seating under Asoka tree. 2. There is a triple canopy over His head (chhatra) 3. He is seating on a throne (sinhasana) 4. Devas are standing with the divine whisk (chamar) 5. Flowers are being showered all around (Pushpa Vrushti) 6. The bright, divine aura is seen (a halo ) 7. Drums are being played 8. The speech given by the Arhata is heard for more then nine miles
There are four more attributes 1. He has a pure character 2. He has infinite power, potency 3. He is omniscient 4. He possesses pure perception
Attributes of SiddhaThe Siddhahood can only be achieved after the total removal of ALL karmas. Because there are eight types of karmas, the attributes of siddha are eight too.

8. Gotra-this Karma destines family surroundings After paying homage to Arihanta and Siddha- the 'Gods'; three teachers are remembered. They areAcharya- the head of the group, Upadhyaya - a monk in the middle rank' and the Sadhu- an ordinary monk These three have their own virtues or are associated with attributes The Acharya has 36 virtues, Upadhyay has 25 virtues and Sadhu has 27 virtues
The 36 virtues of a guru are well defined in Pratikraman Sootra* These 36 virtues are the following: - (a) The control of the five senses of touch, hear, smell, sight and taste (b) The nine limitations of celibacy - avoiding direct contact with the opposite sex, avoiding tempting talk, avoiding a common seat, not observing or looking at bodies or pictures which might corrupt the mind, avoiding places which might corrupt one's mind, avoiding such memories and thoughts, avoiding wrong, plentiful food and avoiding cosmetics, (c) Five different ways of practising good conduct- with knowledge, faith, virtues, austerities and total strength and dedication. (d) The four kashayas -- anger, greed, deceit and pride. (e) The five vows - Non-violence, truth, non-stealing, non-acquisition and celibacy. (f) Panch samiti:- The five restrictions of taking care when walking, speaking, eating and the care of accepting one's needs and discarding what is surplus and unnecessary. (g) Three Guptis:- The three ultimate means to achieve the above - the condition that neither mind, speech nor body should be part of any bad action). = 36 in all
Attributes of UpadhyayThese are 25He has learnt eleven main scriptures and twelve subsidiary scriptures. He is practising one complete set of rules (There are 70 rules) for right conduct and one set of rules (There are 70 rules again) for practical conduct befitting a monk. These are 25 in all.
Sadhu has 27 attributesThese are-They take six vows. They protect all six types of living beings, They have a control over five senses and obey ten religious basic commandments.
Though these list is probably a very old one, one is always puzzled why these types of attributes are associated with specially Acharya, Upadhyaya and Sadhu. The 36 virtues quoted for Acharya are the one associated with a Guru. Now believing that Gurus are Acharyas or Acharyas can only be a true Guru, these virtues are proper and complete. But then 25 virtues associated with Upadhyaya and 27 with Sadhu are more puzzling. Surely it does not mean that the virtues attributed to sadhu are that for sadhus only. Sadhu's virtues list protecting six types of lives but then Upadhyay also protect six types

of lives. Again it is worth noting that in the list of Upadhyay's virtues we have one set of practical rules. This includes seventy different virtues in the group of one. If you look to these 70 virtues it does include five samiti and three guptis, see f and g in the list of Acharya's virtues. This shows that for Acharya five samitis and three guptis are considered eight different virtues where as for a Sadhu these are in the list of 70 virtues grouped as just one
The answer probably lies in the making of the total numbers of virtues, Arihanta's have Siddhas have Acharya Upadhyay Sadhu
In all there are 108 virtues or attributes. This 108 is an auspicious number and all rosaries normally contain 108 beads. Rosary are very important for meditation and because it contains 108 beads, 108 virtues of 'five god like figures' (panch parmeshtins) have been listed. One is advised to remember these 108 virtues whilst meditating.
1. There are eight different types of siddhis or powers which can be achieved by yogic practices. These are Anima Siddhi, Garima Siddhi, Mahima Siddhi, Laghima Siddhi, Prapti Siddhi and Prakamya Siddhi, Vashitva and Ishita Siddhi. Book 2 page 331 2. Since then, ninc centuries have elapsed, and of the tenth century, this is the 80th year. 4 The scriptures Uttaradhyayan, Anuyoga dwar, Nandi Soota only mention this verse Namothunam samanassa bhagavao mahavirassa. 5. Those who are worthy of receiving vandan, namaskar (Obeisance), pooja and satkar (ritual worship) and those who are capable of moksha are called Arhata - Avashyak Niryukti. From Mahavir Vani 6 Those who have conquered over anger, ego, illusion, and greed and have destroyed the enemics likwe attachment and aversion. Those who have removed all the impurities of karmas are called Arihanta or Arhantas- Avashyak Niryukti 1083, From Mahavir Vani. 7. THE CRUSADERS OF CONSERVATION

to the spot and begged for apology from the Bishnois. he also promised that their religious sentiments would always be respected in the future. It was a unique incident of human sacrifice to save the environment. No such thing has ever happened either before or after that incident from that time onwards Bishnois from different parts of the country congregate every year at Khejadli, thirteen kilometres from Jodhpur to pay homage to the 363 martyrs
For Bishnois, the unpaid crusaders of conservation for the last five years, protection of flora and fauna is not mere idle talk but a sacred duty entrusted by one generation to the next. They are so dedicated to this noble cause that no hunter or poacher dare sneak into their domain. Their villages constitute a haven for innocent animals and birds.
Chipko movement (hugging trees to save them) attracted a lot of publicity some years ago. But it was something very insignificant as compared to the unmatched sacrifice and exemplary courage shown by Bishnois community three hundred years ago
The story of their legendary sacrifice to save massacre of green trees dates back to the time when Maharaja Ajit Singh then King of Marwar as building a place for himself Since firewood was needed to run the kilns, his men started killing trees in order to save the largest grove near their village, the Bishnois raised a strong voice of protest The wood cutter did not have enough courage to face them and they stopped chopping the trees. When the news reached the Kings Minister he became furious. He reached the sight and ordered his men to start cutting the trees. In order to stop them Amritadevi, an exceptionally brave Bishnois women embraced a tree trunk and her three daughters followed suit by clasping their hands around other trees. Fuming with rage the Minister ordered his axe man to cut the women along with the trees. Soon they were hacked to death sending shockwave to the people gathered their. For a moment other members of the community stood stunned, Bit then they ampathetically declared that they would not let the Minister have his way. Stepping into the shoes of Amritadevi each embraced a tree to save it and within no time as many as 363 persons had laid down their lives for a noble cause. As soon as the King heard about it, he was appalled. He rushed
Bishnois sect was founded by Guru Jambheshwar born in 1451, he led a simple life. He realised that man should learn to live in harmony with nature. In order to create this awareness amongst his people, he enunciated 29 principles. Thus his followers began to be known as Bishnois-Bish meaning 20 and nois meaning nine Protection of the environment became the central principle.
The Bishnois women wear dazzling bright dresses with ethnic jewellery. They wear typical chunky necklaces, heavy crescent shaped nath (nose ornament), anklets and rakhri on the forehead

(Self-Realization)
This text which is meant to sum-up Shrimad's teachings and his insights on the right means for Spiritual liberation was composed at the suggestion and request of Sri Sobhagyabhai (Background) at a single sitting in Nadiad in the gathering darkness of the night when Sri Ambalal stood with a lantern in his hand
On August 22, 1896
Atma-Siddhi-Shastra, is the quintessence of Shrimad's teachings. The details of the actual composition of this work are of particular interest. This text which is meant to sum up Shrimad's teachings and his insights on the right means for spiritual liberation, was composed at a single sitting on August 22, 1896 in Nadiad. It is in verse and it runs into 142 couplets. Shrimad speaks here of the main obstacles in the way of salvation of the importance of a proper guide (satguru), of the six central tenets, and of the need for spiritual endeavour on the part of the individual.
The prose version by the name 'A letter about six fundamental truths' could not be easily memorised by the aspirants and hence, Sri Sobhagyabhai's request to Shrimad to put the matter in verse. This succinct and accurate composition is a masterpiece in philosophical literature. The author has, in a simple form of question and answer, explained the gist of Jainism and of all true religion namely the six fundamental truths, that the soul exists, that it is eternal, that it is the author of its activities, that therefore, it is responsible for the results of its activities, that it aspires for liberation and that this is achieved by following a right kind of Religion.
Shrimad instructed Sri Ambalalbhai to make out four copies of the manuscript and give one copy each, to his close and deserving disciples namely, to Sri Sobhagyabhai, Sri Ambalalbhai himself, Sri Lalluji Maharaj and lastly to Zaveri Maneklal Ghelabhai.
This is how Laghuraj Swamiji describes the impact that Atma-Siddhi-Shastra made on him: 'On reading it, even on remembering some of its verses, my heart overflowed with gladness, with joy. I realized that each and every verse of it was charged with such a richness of meaning.
